i've figured out that the delray sewage pipe is off atlantic, and has been closed (yay)

the boca pipe is still operating. i discovered it is conveniently located on the beach where i lived from 1979-2007 - off palmetto park road - super

the north broward pipe handles a huge volume of sewage but i have had a hard time determining exactly where it is. is it near hillsboro road or hillsboro inlet?

the pipes are between 3/4 of a mile (boca) and a mile (north broward) off shore and the effluent gets carried north by the gulfstream.fl current

one of my peers has studied fish in hollywood near the effluent pipe there and found that they, indeed, had the intersex characteristics associated with excess estrogens

not only are there naturally occurring estrogens in sewage, and birth control pills, and pesticides that are xenoestrogens, but the chlorines used to disinfect the sewage and the millions of gallons a day are excreted into the ocean is also somewhat estrogenic.

estrogen is the world's oldest biological signaling system used for communications and reproduction across life forms. even coral use estrogen to signal reproduction, a fact that might help to explain the sad decline in coral. . .

anyhow, i'm just trying to find the pompano/north broward outfall pipe. i found it listed as a dive site, "pompano trench" but did not find exact coordinates

has anyone got them?

if anyone is curious, i just got a call from jerry baker (954-831-3061) who got the message i left with the vice mayor's office.

he is in charge of the north broward outfall pipe.

it is at 17th st in pompano. he says it is 1 1/2 miles out and in 110 feet of water.

that's NE 17th st, just south of the Hillsboro inlet, 17 blocks north of atlantic boulevard.

i put his number up there so that if you have further questions you know who to contact and don't have to recreate the legwork.

fwiw, he seemed like a well educated and very nice guy and gave me direct answers to direct questions.

unfortunately, teh answer to most of my questions?

"no one knows, but yeah, everything goes somewhere"

and, the very reasonable and likely 90% correct answer to why the water quality on this beach has gone so far downhill even though the inlet and poop pipe have been ehre all of my life?

the development out west. in order to keep the water off of the land out there, it has to drain somewhere, and where it goes is out of inlets. the brown color comes from rotting vegetation, and who knows what else, as that stuff is not tested

the effluent of the poop pipe is tested for chemicals once a year. i have requested a copy of that report

that's great. but i just got off the phone with the guy who pointed out that it isn't tested for any of the issues i am concerned about. so, the cleanest water that isn't actually tested for most of the toxins known to be in our water. . . .

what they test for is e coli, but they kill that by loading the stuff with chlorine, which they don't test for
