Is it as bad as everyone says it is? Specifically, Park Avenue near the town hall...

I looked at a house there and neighbors didn't seem bad, people were walking their dogs, etc.. It looked like a normal working class neighborhood from what I saw.

But everyone I talk to says to avoid the area like the plague because of crime. Any truth to this?

The crime is a little bad but I would think it is ok in the daytime. I used to work in Lake park.

I would stay away at all costs.Crime is very high and alot goes unreported.
A & M Discount beverage was robbed 3 times one @ gun point,he has a buzzer to let customers in.He will not let his wife work nights.
Saigon Market a suspect was in the store & was caught shoplifting, the owner was threaten & told I have a gun,he then fled, was never caught.
Ice cream man shot to death on Floresteria dr.
carribbean grocery store robbed twice, the last time a shootout insued, they got away, never reported or released to the public.
Kelsey market broken into twice during the night.
Lowes cashier, robbed @ gunpoint @ the garden center.
One man shot to death at the apartment complex on congress, suspects never caught.
Alot of the store fronts are empty, the business owners have fled due to crime or the constant intimidation by code enforcement.
I for one would never live there. I know all this information beacuse my friend owns Kelsey market on park Ave.

Lake Park use to be a nice area, when we first moved here, 30+ years ago, the Twin City Mall was on the corner of Northlake Blvd. and US1, it was a nice little mall. I never hesitated to shop there, I also use to shop at Poston's when it was on Park Ave., than it moved to US1 in Riviera Beach, just a few blocks north of Blue Heron. I also went to other businesses in that area. Never with any concern. Now even if you drive on Northlake east of the railroad tracks you see lots of empty shops, pawn shops, adult book stores. The Twin City Mall is gone, Poston's is gone, there have been many incidents at the Loew's on Congress as well as the Walmart on Congress. The center on the south west corner of Northlake and Congress have had a high number of vehicles stollen. Target on the south east corner of Congress and Northlake and Costco on Northlake have guards patrolling the parking lot.

There is crime everywhere.

If you find a great place - that you are interested in - go back at night. If you are not comfortable doing that, than you have your answer.
