My husband and I are thinking of buying a house near or in Charles Town, WV. My husband will be driving 75mi. from Charles Town to Fort Meade, Md(Laurel, Md). Right now we live in Manassas, Va which is 60mi. but it takes him anywhere between 1hr 45mins-3hrs because of the beltway and 66. Will the traffic from Charles Town be similar as where we live now? He would be taking 340 to 70 to 32 I believe and would be leaving around 4:30am and be leaving work between 3:30-4:30pm? Any advice would be GREAT!!

340-70-32 is the route I take to go ANYWHERE between DC and Baltimore. Traffic isn't bad on any of these roads compared to the beltway. If you follow 270 like most maps suggest you might as well pack a lunch cause the traffic from Frederick to the Beltway is horrific.
You may find 32 gets a little backed up on the one lane road parts but the wait is nothing to worry about. Your husband should look at making the trek in about 1 1/2 hours to 1:45. Nice stress free drive IMO.

340 is getting heavier and heavier as the years go by. Friday evenings getting through Harpers Ferry is getting to take way too long. Thank God I only have 9 years 5 months and 7 days.....not that I am counting or anything

Do you think they will ever turn the bridges into 4 lanes?? I saw an article in the Hagerstown Herald that Washington County is interested in doing it but they need support from VA and WV. I sure hope so!

The area in WV plus a lot in VA is owned by the National Park Service and I have heard they don't want to. If they wanted too they would have made the WV bridge a little wider when they rebuilt it a few years back

sorry chris ..... but i gotta ask ..... why are you looking in charles town vice someplace in maryland closer to ft meade? i can tell you that i drive 45 miles one way to work. the traffic is rarely bad, for the most part it flows at 60 to 65 mph and it's all on four lane highway ...... it still a LONG commute. not that charles town isn't an awesome place to live ..... i've wanted to live here for years before i moved here. but i sure wish that my commute was shorter.

My husband drives to Columbia, MD every day (we live in Shepherdstown). He takes 340 to 70 to 32 often and it usually takes him a little over an hour to an hour and a half. He won't have any problems considering the time he is leaving in the morning. He might get hung up with afternoon traffic on 340 on the way home, but that is about it.

Thank you for all of your advice. As for the reason we are looking at Charles Town and not Maryland, well to be honest I find nothing appealing about Md. We are org. from Lancaster County, Pa so we like the "quiet" country feel, and after living in NOVA for 3yrs we are getting tired of the "rat race". I think the Charles Town area will be a nice place for our children to grow up.

In that case you do not repeat do not want to live in MD. Born and raised in Northern VA (Vienna) with both my Mom's and Dad's family from around Charles Town/ Middleway. Lived in MD for 8 years and even though I work there will NEVER live there again. Taxes, politics etc are just too much to take.
Once I got married and thought about where I wanted my children to grow up I go out of Gaithersburg back home where the family is from. The commute is the price I pay and it's for my children.
