retiring soon and looking for a place within a days drive to jersey that treats it's seniors well.
certainly cannot afford to live here in the garden state after i stop working.
are there any incentives, in taxes, health care, prescription programs, for the over 65 crowd?
how about vehicle inspection, auto insurance, real estate taxes?
all these things are important to those of us on a fixed income.
inquiring minds want to know...........
looking to visit near grafton, bridgeport, and fairmont in oct.
any nice places to stay when you are there?
WV treats it senior ok in regard to hospitality.
Medical care in the state as whole is sub-par. Morgantown with WVU would be the best bet with their medical center and proximity to Pittsburgh but that is about it.
Taxes.
Do not expect a break just because your a senior retired person.
WV ranks number 13 in the nation in "overall" taxation. Granted property taxes are a fraction of New Jersey (WV native and lived in Mt. Laurel for 10 years in NJ) but the rest of the taxation will catch up to ya.
Consider:
Food and clothing
NJ 0 WV 6% across the board
Gas Taxes:
NJ #48 in the nation WV in the top 5.
Communications:
Weak on cell for the most part.
Verizon in NJ is about half the price as WV for basic home phone service
Auto:
NJ, no car tax
WV, car tax and many hidden personal property taxes.
Amenities:
NJ, everything at your fingertips
WV, everything in another state.
Pensions:
WV will tax your pension. My fathers biggest gripe is double taxation.
He already paid his taxes during his working years, now he is taxed again on money he already paid taxes on in the past.
Trip from North Central WV to NJ. Expect a tour. Outside of taking 79 to the PA turnpike in Washington, PA expect two lanes roads made by a drunk on a bulldozer. WV isn't called Wild and Wonderful for nothing and the roads are definately wild!
My advice:
If you want rolling hills, lower property taxes, less income tax, maintain your 0% sales tax on food and clothing, lower car insurance, and of course good health care??
Look at Clarion County, Pennsylvania off I-80. or even SW Pennsylvania by Uniontown or Washington, PA off the PA Turnpike. Somerset is nice also.
Most of the state is Seniors...look for breaks everywhere you go...also great place to settle esp from other state...can sell a house in NJ and buy a house in town for cheaper and pocket alot of money
