"Beginning in March, the agency will start the process of closing as many as 2,000 post offices, on top of the 491 it said it would close starting at the end of last year. In addition, it is reviewing another 16,000—half of the nation's existing post offices—that are operating at a deficit, and lobbying Congress to allow it to change the law so it can close the most unprofitable among them. The law currently allows the postal service to close post offices only for maintenance problems, lease expirations or other reasons that don't include profitability."

The idiots are actually planning to close the Morgantown downtown Post Office, which is so busy you often have to wait in line a half hour for services? Incredible. I guess since they have a monopoly on the junk mail business, they can just make people travel further to stand in line.
If that location is "unprofitable" it has to be because they are paying rent for it instead of using the much larger and more efficient facility they own and allow to sit vacant basically right across the street.
The head of the Huntington Sorting facility initially hadn't heard any rumors about the sorting facility here closing and noted that it was much more efficient than the Charleston facility so he felt that was unlikely to happen. The Huntington sorting facility and and three others are being combined with Charleston currently. Managers, it seems, are often the last to hear.
But the gov't is so profitable and efficient with everything that it runs, why would they close? Funny how USPS can't deliver a letter and turn a profit, but UPS can deliver packages and be a profitable company.

nice
I can't believe they want to close my PO in Clendenin. We have a street address too, but it will still take longer to get our mail.
I think that the idea of closing some locations is good, but it won't work as well as they think it will.

Did you know that UPS also brings packages to the Postal Service for delivery? UPS moves them on their trucks, but has found that they can make even more of a profit by having the Postal Service deliver some of them instead of using their own delivery personnel.
Also did you know that the Postal Service is currently required to prefund thier future retirement benifits at a rate of $5.5 Billion a year? Even though it has overpaid this fund in the amount of $50 - $75 Billion, depending on which independent accounting firms estimate you use.
