I've decided to take the wife on a scenic WV road trip this weekend. I don't know if it was all the talk on this forum or just the natural pioneer in me, but i just feel the need to get out and drive through the beautiful mountains. It's been a couple of years since we took a drive into Pocahontas and Randolph Counties, so i figured why not do it in the middle of summer to beat the heat.
Starting off Saturday morning (probably before the crack of dawn in Saint Albans) drop off the kid at grandparents and begin our voyage on I-79 north east to Flatwoods, then hop on Rt 19 south to Summersville. From there i will procede east onto Rt 39 through Richwood and onto the Highland Scenic Byway (43 miles) that traverses through the mountains to elevations as high as 4,500 ft. and is the gateway to the Monongahela National Forest. At the community of Mill Point we should come to the intersection of Rt 219. I plan to take 219 north through Marlington, probably stop for some lunch there, and continue on to Snowshoe Mountain. Going to stay the evening and night at Snowshoe, (i believe it's Wine and Jazz Fest this weekend) wake up late Sunday, possibly do some downhill mountain biking, then pack up and head out north again on 219 to Elkins.
If i have enough time, i could drive on to Thomas for a late lunch. But if we start feeling crunched for time, might head back towards home on 33 west at that point.

A slight twist to your path, but you might consider Rt 66 from Snowshoe to Route 92 and then back to Elkins on Routes 92/250. I always found that drive prettier (versus 219) and Cass, Green Bank, Durbin, and others are along the route.
If you go over to Thomas I would suggest Route 33 from Elkins to Harman, and then Route 32 to Thomas, then pickup Route 219 back to Elkins.
I visited Spruce Knob and Seneca Rocks 2 years ago when I went to Elkins for the Mountain Fest. So this will be new scenery.
