I have done some searching to find information on the topics I'm going to ask about, but I am not clear about how it all fits in with my (perhaps not so unique) situation.

I lived in WV for just under a year. Unlike most people in my situation, I went ahead and got WV license plates/driving license. Surprisingly easy process, and it all cost me about $50 total (and no tax because I was titling the car in my name as a gift from a family member).

I've been out of WV for 2 months now, with 2 months left on my WV registration and still with my WV license. (bring on the scalding, I suppose I deserve it) Part of the reason for this is that I am actually undecided on what other state I'll be living in (Might be moving to my home state with my family, may not be, staying with a friend for now). I am just now realising that WV could very well find out that I'm not a resident anymore and yank my license. I want to ride out my WV registration though, since both states I might "settle" in have much worse DMV practices, and I want to wait as long as possible before shelling out that cash. What is my best option here? Can I wait or is it possible my license is already in jeopardy? I'm afraid to call the DMV and have them say "Oh? Consider your registration gone" and I can't drive anywhere! I updated my address through the USPS, but not have not had anything forwarded to where I am staying.

Second, this personal property tax, I have never heard of this until a month ago. I only owned my car while in WV. (which I paid no title tax on) Is it possible there's some form sitting in my former mailbox requesting money form me? Is it only required upon registration renewal? I don't want to be on a list of tax cheats, and the plan of "just never get pulled over" is ideal but not realistic.

Assuming you receive the forwarded mail: you will need either a tax receipt or a statement from the assessor's office stating that you do not owe tax.

Taxes are assessed based on if you lived in WV on July 1. If you lived in WV on July 1 and owned the vehicle at that time, you will owe a year's tax even if you move to another state. {at least that is the way I understand it}. If unpaid, your name will be published in the paper the following year.

You could get by with renewing another year {or two if you pay twice the amount} if you have a tax receipt or the statement from the assessor [plus proof of insurance].

I had moved out of WV to another state and moved back within the year. I did not switch my plates to the new state when I moved because I had to renew my plates in WV 2 months before the move. It was a product of bad timing. As mentioned before by a previous poster, as long as you renew and keep your tax receipt and the like you should be okay even if you move to another state.
