One of the Depression-era Federal Programs was the Federal Writers' Project, which provided unemployed teachers, journalists and others an opportunity to write about the people and history of their regions. The West Virginia Federal Writers' Project produced a book,
West Virginia: A Guide to the Mountain State (
link) that was published in 1942.
The
Seneca Trail Writers' Project is an effort to preserve the memories of life along Rte 219:
Welcome, you’ve found the site where we are collecting voices from the past to create an interactive tour of US 219 in West Virginia. Step back in time and recall these mountains as they looked more than 70 years ago, when hard times inspired communities to remember, and rebuild. Our forests were being replanted, highways were being paved for our way. Calling you back, to seek the open air, adventure, and the stories of what has survived.
There's a "trip-tic" of Rte 219 from Red House, MD to Ronceverte, a picture of a "turkey drive" down 219, recollections of the construction of Watoga State Park. Take a look, you'll find something interesting I'm sure.
