I met a women here in Morgantown last year who had moved here from Cape Cod. She came because we have work here, but she said she likes it and plans to stay.
Born and raised in Pittsburgh, we moved to escape the taxes to west virginia. Brooke county, just off of us22. We can make it from home to downtown, in rush hour traffic, in an hour or so. The taxes are1/7th of allegheny county (pittsburgh area) i would suggest you look in Green county on the I 70 corridor in PA, or hancock or brooke county in WV. Good luck, and Go Stillers!!! (get used to it)
I have driven from Carnegie PA to Oakland before (right near technology drive) and it has taken 50 minutes. A lot of this depends on what time you will be leaving to and from work. During non-rush hour it is possible to make it from the Weirton area to downtown Pittsburgh in about 45 minutes, during rush hour I would put it at closer to an hour and a half. I would suggest looking more north of Pittsburgh for rural land with an easier commute, but if you really like the Northern Panhandle it would be a possible commute, just wanted to give some perspective of what it would be like.
They're trying to avoid the atrocious PA property taxes. You can't do that north of Pittsburgh. You can do it west of Pittsburgh... about 25 miles west.
Those counties are all essentially Pittsburgh suburbs, especially Hancock. You can expect that they have heavier population density than most of West Virginia. West Virginia does not have any large cities. There are still nice rural areas in those counties, especially Brooke, Ohio, and Marshall and they are all within commuting distance to Pittsburgh.
Thank you to everyone for your helpful replies. I think I'm going to have to go up and do the drive a few times to see what the true commute is. The Pittsburgh forum says the tunnels average 30 minutes during rush hour. Then of course, winter conditions will probably increase the drive somewhat also, I'd think...
So! The northern panhandle to Pittsburgh commute might be too much for me.
But, it is a lovely part of the country for sure. Wild wonderful West Virginia for sure.
PS: I'm the OP. I forgot my password and couldn't get the reset PW to work.

Give the northside of Uniontown a look too, the new 4 lane into the east end of Pittsburgh might be the route for your new job. No tunnels that way.
Why not gve it up altogether and live in the city...rent...forget about the farm.
It's a great town. Enjoy it completely!
