Re: Mardi Gras Casino in Cross Lanes. I'm a bit out of the loop as far as local politics are concerned, and I just heard about this issue recently. I read something about construction promises not being kept, but is there a Ralph Reed-type, Born Againer element to it? If so, then I want to go browbeat the Evangelicals on the comment sections of some newspaper articles.

Religion mostly.

Although, some people are opposed to table games for the social problems they can bring, not related to religious reasons.

I'd agree that it is mostly religous, but also some people think that it leads to addiction and side issues. As a Christain, I believe that gambling is wrong, but I supported table games in Kanawha County at the time because I felt that people have the right to do so if they wish, plus the casino at the time promised to build a 250 million dollar resort/convention center. Now that they have fell short of their promice, some republicans feel that they should lose their right to offer tables games. Well 800 jobs could be lost if that is the case, I know they aren't good jobs, but for some people that is the best they could get because of there skills or education. So I'm a Christain/Republican that still suports table games in Kanawha County, bu wish that the casino would keep its word.

Well, I'm a Christian who doesn't believe gambling is wrong. Gambling is entertainment. Like anything else, it can be done to excess. Excessive behavior is what is wrong. But excessive behavior can take many forms, not just gambling and if you are going to outlaw things just because people can do them to excess, then you are going to outlaw virtually every enjoyable activity. Living in a free country means people have the freedom to make choices, even if they sometimes make bad ones. Every time they pass a law that restricts those choices, they are moving us a step closer to being a police state. In recent years, they have been passing a lot of restrictive laws.

People in Kanawha have a choice to make. Are they going to shove hundreds of jobs out the door because the casino owners didn't keep their promise (I mean they should have trusted the Mafia in the first place, right)? Or are they going to accept that they have been dupped but realize it would be counter productive to destroy jobs? It is not the first time folks have been sold a bill of goods. I highly suspect it goes on in that general region more than people realize.

Not all of those 800 jobs are bad or bad paying. There are cocktail waitresses at the racetrack that bring in above 30K when tips are factored into their wages. Also, the racetrack doesn't keep track of the cash tips the servers receive, only the tips put on debit and credit cards.

A balance is being created with all the other addictions.

Legal and non-legal drug use. Alcholism...tobacco.

Pornography...

As our society debases itself, everything that seemed wrong in a former society and time is accepted.

I wonder if the Chinese or Muslims have time for these indulgences in their societial strata.

Why don't they?
All beneficial...helps the seniors, education...tourism...medical community...creates jobs...

'The money is there...if I don't take it, someone else will'....old mafia mantra.

What if we/everyone got out of debt....saved and invested...traveled...pushed our education?
I'll answer that one...'we would be called names...

I'm a student of history...I see it repeating itself with the greatest country in the history of the planet.
Our parallel is Rome...

Chinese people love to gamble. Ever hear of Macao? It is bigger than Vegas. They also have pornography.

I know several people from the ME and they love to drink, gamble, and womanize. In their society they can be punished for doing so. Im not sure what your argument is? Should we aspire to be more like the ME?

Why would you "browbeat" folks who vote according to their beliefs? Isn't that what they are supposed to do?

I care less either way but there are no jobs being created here. Gambling only moves money around on this level.

When Toyota built their plant here, they created something to distribute elsewhere. Jobs were created.

Gambling only alows people to spend their money on entertainment as opposed to something else. Gamble enough and you can't afford to buy a new car and the guy at the local auto dealership loses his job.

Gamble a little and forget the new widescreen television this year. So in the end, these jobs are a wash. Not that people shouldn't be able to pick how they want to spend their money.

As a people we somehow have to take notice and stop electing the elitists, who are disconnected from us ordinary peons, to office and start electing populists. Most of the elitists consider themselves "globalists" who are citizens of the world, and their loyalty lies with special interests rather than with the people they represent. But before you criticize the casinos, remember that state government itself has pimped itself out to gambling interests with a major part of its budget now coming from others misery.
Although most play the lottery for fun, there are those who cash their childrens welfare checks and p*ss the money down the drain for scratchoffs and Power Ball tickets.

Our rulers insulate themselves from the consequences of their actions. The lottery folks even got themselves a new palace on the backs of state taxpayers.
