I know every bar/restaurant in Wheeling but since you're only in town one evening, and to keep it simple, I would say just go to Oglebay. River City downtown on the first floor of the artisan center has a nice Friday happy hour until 8pm and they have some different beers on tap not just the same old coors light, miller, etc. The Alpha is a good place that gets packed on Friday evening. If you like slots, table games and/or greyhound racing by all means go to the casino. I've never been to that polka dot cafe place in Moundsville but people people seem to like it.
ur better off not even stopping off here at all unless ur looking to score some drugs cus there aint shiiiittttt to do here and thats all ppl care about around here some ppl walk around here looking like zombies definitly dont go to downtown area if your looking for something to do because i live right outside of downtown in east wheeling and half the buildings on my street alone are abandoned as well as many parts of wheeling if you really wanna do anything at all here i guess id suggest the oglebay resort even though it rly aint nothin special canton is alot more interesting than wheeling i would just go straight to pittsburgh if i were you cause your gonna b bored as hell once you get here
Thanks for all the suggestions and we're due to arrive in Wheeling tonight. We're in Akron now and will go to the Football Hall of Fame today.
Heading over to Wheeling this evening, our plan is to stop in Bridgeport for a quick picture of the high school gym that's named after Boston Celtics legend John Havlicek. Then to Oglebay Park and Museum to check that out, quickly.
For dinner we'll try Coleman's Fish Market. After that we'll look into the Artisan before finishing with a drink at Ye Olde Alpha - that's near our hotel.
Kruger Street Toy Museum looked interesting but it closes at 5pm, so I doubt we'll arrive in time (but if we do then we'll head over there first.) Their web site is clunky, though. Had to hunt a bit to find simple basics like hours open. A lesser man would've said screw it, and not even bothered to find the info there.
Tomorrow morning we'll drive around a little to check out Centre Wheeling and Victorian Old Town. Unless someone can give a good breakfast recommendation in Wheeling, or on the way over to Pittsburgh, we'll head south to Grandma Jo's Polka Dot Cafe 712 3rd St., Moundsville, WV. We'll catch the Pirates game at PNC Park tomorrow might. We hear it's a beautiful ball park!
I realize our timing doesn't give us a whole lot of time to do justice to Wheeling, but thank you to the folks here who chimed in - you've helped us make the best of our visit.
FYI, the NFL Hall of Fame in Akron is practically Steelers West. If you remember the great teams from the 70s, almost all the starters from that era are in the Hall.
PNC Park is indeed beautiful. Weather forecast looks excellent, and you'll be catching the Pirates on an up-tick. They just took 2 out of 3 from the Reds, and are only 2 games out of first place in the division. James McDonald is slated to start for the Pirates Saturday night, and he's been impressive so far this year; a couple of weeks ago I think he carried a perfect game into the 7th inning.
If you can, arrive at the ballpark early, 5:30 or 6:00pm for a 7pm game. You'll want to have time to stroll around the park, and then get your Primanti Brothers sandwich and a favorite beverage before heading to your seats.
We like to park over on the South Side and take the Gateway Clipper boat across to the game, but you might prefer to park closer to the stadium.
