Hi. My wife and I are considering a move to Charles Town from Winchester, VA. We both have jobs in Winchester, but are looking to get new jobs in Northern VA (Leesburg or Ashburn).

We found a few nice looking townhomes, but my wife is really concerned about West Virginia.

We've driven through Inwood and seen the staggering number of strip clubs, and my wife is really worried about living near a casino. (We have a newborn and want at least 2 more...)

Can anyone speak about the Charles Town area: specifically the outskirts of the town, that are more country-like and have the newer home and townhome communities.

I'm a Northern VA native and lived there all my life, but when we got married, we couldn't afford to live in the area, so we moved to Winchester.

We've considered WV a few times before, but my wife has always been concerned, in all frankness, with the strip clubs, the gaming, and the "trashy" appearance of a lot of it...

I would love some input on Charles Town for a young family, looking to stay there for awhile...perhaps permanently.

(Also, the area we're moving from in Winchester...we did a lot of research on it, saw zero crime from online sources, but when we moved there...we moved in 3 doors down from a drug dealer...so we're really concerned about safety...)

THANKS!

This topic has been discussed time and time again on these forums. I will give you a few of my impressions.

I live in a bedroom community in Ranson and work in Ashburn VA. From my bedroom I can see the lights of the casino about a mile away. Frankly at times I forget it is there except for the weekend when I commute into Northern Virgina (I work night shift) and have to deal with the traffic. Having said that there is a new 'highway' that is scheduled to open soon to deal with some of this.

If you do decide to move out here, do not live next to the casino. The neighborhoods there do look trashy. Stick to the bedroom developments- Fairfax Crossing, Shanadoah Springs, Windmill Crossing, Huntsfield etc. You can get a decent deal on a townhouse in this depressed economy- homes are selling a bit less than what I paid for mine.

There are strip clubs in the area. Two in Jefferson County (one of them is about a mile from my house) and three in Berekerly County. I pass by them every now and again. But they don't bother me and I don't bother them. At times I forget that they are even there.

If you move to Jefferson County you will:

1) Miss the ample retail rampantly available in Winchester- malls, wholesale clubs, movie theaters etc. You will have to leave the county in order to shop at stores that aren't in the Charles Town/Ranson Area. Best Buy, Bed Bath and Beyond, Michaels, TJ Maxx, Costco, Sam's, Bj's, Wegmans, Kmart, Target and movie theaters come to mind.

More people are relocating here due to the high cost of living in in Northern VA. I hope retail in the area expands (having the casino here helps), but it has been slow very slow.

2) Pay more for car insurance (than VA)

3) Pay less in car taxes (than VA)

4) Pay more for gas (than VA)

5) Enjoy the beautiful scenery of living in a valley surrounded by mountains

6) Marvel at the historic sites in Jefferson County

7) Hate the limited availability of tv and Internet providers No Verizon FiOS only Comcast and Frontier.

8) Have to deal with the limited roadways leading into Northern Virgina. Route 9 on the VA side is down right dangerous. Route 340 is a little better but will add to your commute time.

9) Deal with less crime- hey we are in the country. It is still here, but on a smaller scale.

10) Deal with limited media reporting on the area. The DC tv stations or radio stations are hard pressed to mention any news good or bad happening (or weather forecasts) in Jefferson County. So for local news you will rely on 740 AM WRNR or NBC 25 WHAG. Even Winchester's TV 3 doesn't cover the Charles Town or Ranson area. It is almost comical in a way.

Just a few thoughts on this issue. I hope that helps. I can't answer any questions on schools or child care- because I am single and don't have any kids.

Fantastic and VERY helpful response, Venture2000! Thanks!

I did do a search before I posted (that always seems like the first thing that
people say to new people asking for help in a forum)...but I didn't find the
kind of answers you provided.

I'd still like more impressions, if possible.

There's also the possibility of us being able to work in Purcellville, VA, which
would make for a much shorter commute.

We LOVE the country...and LOVE the mountains surrounding Charles Town.

We've been in Winchester for 2 years now, and we both love the slower pace
of life than in Northern VA. I think we'd like it even more in Charles Town.

Thanks again.

I'll give you my quick thoughts on the topic. I grew up in Northern Va, and now live in Martinsburg. My husband works in Winchester. We have a toddler in daycare. I love it here. I don't miss the hustle and bustle of Nova in the least (or for that matter, Winchester either). But like Venture said, you'll still travel for a few things. I personally don't mind. We frequently shop in Winchester or Hagerstown. Most of our doctors are in Winchester or Leesburg. Loudoun County has a lot more kid and family friendly things to do, so we frequently travel that way too. I think WV is a great place to live, but just be prepared for a bit of driving for the things you're used to, and I don't think you'll regret it. Hope this helps!

Oh, and ditto what Venture said about the strip clubs. We don't go to them, I think they are an eyesore, it's sometimes humorous to use one as a landmark when giving people directions, but you pretty much get used to them and ignore them. If your family and friends are from out of state, they probably will tease you about the state and stereotypes, but you learn to ignore those too!

You should just live in Northern Virginia. Get a one bedroom apartment. There's no strip clubs around there, or casinos, with undesirables hanging around like in WV. You need to put your newborn children first, and there's no way around it, you can't be around the bad elements that are in WV.

"Undesirables hanging around"?? That's just ridiculous. I've lived in this area for about 8 years now, haven't had or seen or heard about the slightest problems.

Never been to the strip club, how hard is it to ignore it?

Been to the casino a few times, it's perfectly pleasant, haven't had any issues. Nor has anyone I've ever talked to about it.

A few parts of the general area are not the best-looking, like some of Ranson, and Halltown by the paper mill. But most of the area is more recently built and is clean. Generally, it's a nice-looking area to live in, with open space and nice views of the hills.

Tenortodd, it doesn't matter to me if you decide to live here or not. Honestly, I'd kind of rather you didn't, to keep the traffic down. But don't decide based on some nonsense about "undesirables", like we're some skanky ghetto. My wife, 11-year-old, and I love it out here.

I guess the sarcasm of my post was lost on you, spunkydawg. Personally, I'd rather live in a state with strip clubs, head shops, casinos, etc., because that is a state that allows people to take personal responsibility for their own decisions and does not attempt to legislate a dominant view of morality on others. Virginia honestly seems like a better fit for the original poster, since he automatically equates things like strip clubs with danger or family unfriendliness. Personally, if I don't like strip clubs, I won't go to them... simple as that. It doesn't bother me that they exist.

OK, sorry, my bad. It's sometimes hard to tell the difference between sarcasm/humor and idiocy/trolling.

I am from NOVA, my husband and I moved here not quite 2yrs ago. I will say I still miss nova very much..everything "looks" nicer and in general is well maintained. I feel WV is not as nice(IMO) I also feel the people aren't as "polished"( you see people out and about in PJ's ) With that said, the clubs used to bother me A LOT, I hated having friends/family over and them asking about all of them. I've gotten used to them and deal with it. The casino has never really bothered me, I don't gamble but my husband and I will go there on occasion to final cut for dinner then have some drinks so I don't mind it.
