I'm interested in relocating to the Monongahela NF area. I am very interested in boating, trout fishing hiking gardening traveling camping and just being ouside enjoying nature. I am lookin at the 4 county area between Pocahontas, Webster, Greenbriar, and Nicholas Co., but would consider other areas. Lakes are a huge plus for me, as are pristine trout rivers. I've looked at towns from Hinton to Elkins and could use some direction from those in the know. Where would be some great spots in this area for me?
I NEED an area where I can garden, and have a small pasture for a few animals. Not talkin' a herd, just a few for myself.
I'd like to be out in the stix, but no more than an hour from a WallyWorld and a real grocery store. I would like to have ten acres or so, so's not to disturb my neighbors with 'excessive' firearm discharge noise and such
I probably won't need a job, but might like to someday have something part time in the engineering field...........and I mean real part time..........just enough to keep my license active

My personal favorite is Pocahontas County (my mother grew up there). 1000 square miles, less than 10,000 population. Most of the county is MNF, Watoga State Park, or State Forest.
Shouldn't be any problem finding a farmstead of 10+ acres. The Little Levels area around Hillsboro is especially nice.

Many thanks for your prompt response. I'll check those links. I've read those population stats and was amazed at the low density per sq mi. Would you characterize this area as liberal or conservative? And thanks for the tip on Hillsboro, I don't think I've researched that but satt. photos look promising.

The area is mostly "leave me alone and I will leave you alone".
Their website still lists a P O Box in Hillsboro, but since the death of the founder in 2002 it seems to be withering. According to Wikipedia, membership is down to fewer than 800, with less than 10 paid staffers.
I've visited the area (camping in Watoga SP) multiple times in the last decade, and if I didn't happen to know it was there (somewhere), there's nothing to indicate its presence.
