I live in Kanawha County and woke up this morning to find snow on the ground and rooftops and was really caught unawares. There was nothing on the CHarleston Daily Mail about it last night on their website. I've noticed this trend since moving here from the Baltimore area with the local media really not paying attention to snow predictions. In Baltimore the mere possibility of snow would warrant a news story/alert on the news websites and any snow over 1-2 inches would probably be the top news story unless there is a Ravens game that day too. Even then snow might still be the top story. And whenever any snow is predicted there will be a rush at the supermarkets and Walmarts for supplies and food just in case its bad.

The weird thing is it seems Charleston and outlying areas still ARE surprised by snow and the school systems still close as easily here as they do in Maryland. Last week Kanawha County, Putnam County, and Lincoln County all had snow days. Even Pocahontas County which is high up in the mountains and gets more snow has lost a lot of snow days. But the local media still doesn't seem to pay attention to snow in their news coverage. I really wonder why that is. This is still not like Chicago where snow is so often that its not worth covering, or is it?

That is because West Virginia does not care,
what other states think or beleive.

It's winter time so count on snow everyday, and if you wake up
and there is no snow them thank God Our Holy Father it's not snowing.

There is seldom a lot of snow in the lower lying areas in West Virginia. What you normally get is a dusting or a few inches that goes away in a few days, and is easily removed from the roadways. The highway folks are used to dealing with that and it tends to pose few problems. The higher elevations are another matter altogether. They get a lot more snow in those areas, but people there are usually prepared with 4 wheel drive vehicles and the like. That is why we don't tend to panic when the snow comes.

Right now there is maybe 1/2 inch of snow on the ground in Morgantown, and all the roads are totally clear. Within eyesight is the Allegheny Mountain Range. They have plenty of snow up there, but they are ready to deal with it.

Because the news devoting it to the top story changes what? It still snowed. It's winter. It snows. Unless it's a huge snow storm it's not really news.

I find it interesting that despite the news not panicking the schools still close up there even in the highest ranges! That's got to be a headache for Pocahontas County to close that often! What is the most they've ever had?

Living in Elkins... snow is just a given. It would be like the news covering a sunny day in the summer.
