The Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission today awarded contracts to begin construction of Phase II of the Southern Beltway (I-579). Phase I, which has been open for several years, connects the Pittsburgh International Airport with US Rte 22, midway between Pittsburgh and Weirton. Phase II will continue the expressway southeast to an intersection with I-79 near the Allegheny-Washington county border.

Combined with the newly improved I-79/I-70 interchange near Washington, this will greatly improve access to the airport for those traveling from the south. The project is expected to be completed by 2019.

That will be huge for this area. it will cut the travel time to the Pittsburgh Airport down to 50 minutes from Morgantown, and 35 minutes from Wheeling. We'll be a short distance from a real International Airport. That can only help us, long term.

I don't know how fast you're driving, but it'll be a bit longer than 35 min from Wheeling. It's currently about an hour (going the speed limit, mind you) taking either I-70/79/379 or WV 2 and US 22. The connector is only 12 miles long, so it'll be about 60 miles total from Wheeling to PIT and still about 70 miles from Morgantown to PIT. Don't get me wrong, it'll definitely be nice to not have to worry about the Parkway traffic (and I'd pay whatever tolls there were to avoid that!), but if you're driving that fast, may the cops have mercy on you!

Depends on what part of Wheeling you're talking about. I suppose 35 minutes is optimistic, but it will definitely be a major improvement. I made that drive for several years since I actually worked at PIT, but at the time I was driving from Bellaire and Bridgeport, Ohio so it took longer, but it is definitely not 60 miles to the Airport from Warwood. The airport is on the west side of Pittsburgh by several miles, and several minutes closer than driving to Pittsburgh itself from Warwood.

Google says the current driving times are 1 hour 1 minute to cover the 59 miles from Elm Grove via I-70, and 58 minutes from Warwood to cover the 43.3 miles via WV-2 and US-22. It's going to trim maybe 10 minutes off of that from the Elm Grove side, especially during commuting hours. A closer inspection from Morgantown would indicate it will take about 1 hour 6 minutes.
