West Virginia doesn't get much love on here. I was always wondering what that building with all the huge satellite dishes was when I drove by on I-79. I had an occasion to stay in Fairmont, albeit briefly, and I found out its a NASA facility. The people are friendly and it seems like a nice state. Not in the headlines much, but maybe that's good. Seems like the facility got bad press when it originally was built but beloved Senator Byrd got it done.
I always joke that this was where the bifocal was invented. A Flat Top is a type of bifocal also known as a D segment. Many folks prefer the progressive lenses even though a Flat Top has superior optics and cost a lot less (and makes a lot less money for your Optical store).

Cutting edge research is done at the Fairmont NASA facility, including robotics research in conjunction with the world class robotics program at WVU, and satellite design in conjunction with WVU Engineering, both based in nearby Morgantown.
That is probably in or related to the National Radio Quiet NRQZ zone that straddles the mountains of WV and V, a 400 sq mile area ware they limit radio signals for the radio telescope. This is what got me looking at WV because the housing was so cheap as people did not want to live there without cellphones. I could live with no cell phone but i need bus service and doctors nearby so I'll probaly be moving to one of the cities
But i did start another script ware energy based aliens invade through the radio telescope but they have trouble getting out to the rest of the world because the frequency isolation

Part of the satellites are for NASA which is an IV&V facility (independent verification and validation) and the other satellites are used by NOAA to download and store weather history from satelites (simplified answer).

WV is wonderful, it just needs an economy overhaul.
Also funny enough, Fairmont is the only town I've been to in WV where nobody I happened on was friendly at all. The folks I met seemed very upset and, honestly, shades of ghetto (coincidentally black on top of it). Granted, I was out very late and at a very poorly maintained gas station, so maybe I was in the Fairmont "ghetto". :P
I've been meaning to give the place a second shake, but my travel means are very limited these days.

So, you are telling us that you were out very late at a run down gas station, and you are going to base your opinion of the town on that experience?

You can take it that way if you want, but it'd be very negative of you. Or you can take it in the casual, somewhat tongue-in-cheek way I meant it. After all, I did say;
