Considering moving to Mason County. Does anyone know about that area? Is it safe, is it flood prone, good schools? Any info would help.

Mason County is a small rural county situation in the Ohio River Valley. The county has no interstate access, however is quickly accessible to Huntington, Charleston, or Parkersburg.

The area is fertile and is known mostly for it's agriculture.

Point Pleasant High School is the largest school in the area, it is a AA school, approx 600 students in 4 grades.

Wahama is the 2nd largest school in the county. It's located in the small community of New Haven. Wahama is a small class- A school, has probably fewer than 300 students in 4 grades.

Industry wise, you have Mountaineer Power plant located near New Haven. And a new Super Wal-Mart opened up across the river from Pomeroy, OH in Mason City.

I believe the overall population in the county is just above 20,000 residents. The County Seat of Point Pleasant is the site of the Mothman Prophecies, and borders the Kanawha and Ohio Rivers.

Tu Indu Wie Park is a popular riverfront park in Point Pleasant, along with Krodell Park outside of town near Jericho Road.

Thank you so much for the info. New Haven is where my husbands job site will be. We know nothing about the area except for a trip we took there a few weeks ago on a
Saturday(a 3hr drive for us), but we didn't get to check anything out.

Glad i could help, and if you have any further questions, this is a good site to ask.
My parents live in the Ripley area, which is about 20 miles from New Haven. Ripley is a nice little smalltown, has lots of fast food restaraunts, and a little bit of shopping.

That was my next question Ripley or Evans WV. I have heard that is a very nice place. How about the schools, housing, crime rate, flooding, or any other info you may have?

I have spent a lot of time in the Mason County area. I would say it is a very safe area- given the state of the world today! As for flooding, the western border of the county is the Ohio River and yes it does flood in places. I would say that the bulk of the flooding would occur in the southern part of the county, particularly in the Glenwood area. That would require you to find an alternate route to Huntington. New Haven is farther north in the county and I wouldn't think flooding would be as common in that area. I think the schools are good also. The area is largely agricultural, if I'm not mistaken it is the leading ag county in the state. There are several towns in Ohio that are near. Gallipolis is a very nice, quaint town. Between Pt. Pleasant and Gallipolis, there are most of the day to day things that you would need---restaurants, car dealerships, Wal-Mart, and so on. As stated, Huntington, Charleston and Parkersburg are all easily reached as is Columbus Ohio which obviously would have anything you need ( about 2 hours I would say)

Evans, WV in Jackson County is a very nice bedroom community for Ripley (Ripley is just 3 miles east). Most of the homes are built in the valley of what used to be really nice farmland. Last i checked though, homes can be pretty expensive if you are in some of the newer neighborhoods going in.
You might be able to find somthing in a more modest price range up on the hill on Route 87 or closer to Mount Alto or Millwood.

Just want to make a quick correction. Wahama Jr.-Sr. High School is located in Mason and has 7th through 12th grades with a total enrollment between five and six hundred. The elementary school for the northern portion of Mason County is located in New Haven.
