Why can't prisoners from state and federal prisons collect the garbage from state parks and federal facilities during the shutdown? How about using the military to collect the garbage. They're still getting paid aren't they?

I have no problem with the prisoners being used to collect garbage, government shutdown or not. I think they should be used on a wide array of projects with their wages being split between them and the prison. That way they are contributing to the cost of housing them.

I don't want to see the military used because they should be reserved for more important duties.

Federal employees, not deemed essential, are forbidden to work on behalf of the government during a lapse in funding appropriations.

National Guard is used to collect trash off streets after floods. They have the experience.

Are prisoners federal employees? Any federal corrections officers guarding prisoners collecting trash would be deemed essential.

Moving this thread fro the Charleston sub-forum to the main West Virginia forum. It has no particular relevance to the Charleston area. Obviously, something dealing with state prisoners is relevant to the entire state.

Let' make sure we stay focused in West Virginia in this forum.

Of course they do The dept. of the defense is funded through Sept. 2019. The Coast guard does not because, they aren't classified as DOD.

Where in the world are you getting your info? That is totally incorrect. All military members, military retirees, military annuitants (survivor benefit recipients), and DoD civilian employees that fall under the Department of Defense will receive their regular paychecks
