Snowshoe typically has the best conditions throughout the year. Timberline and Canaan are next to each other and have the same weather. Timberline typically does less grooming to keep a more powder base. Canaan grooms more so their base lasts longer. Winterplace is a distant 4th in conditions.
Snowshoe has the highest terrain, highest average annual snowfall and best snow-making equipment which results in usually the best conditions and longest ski season. Timberline/ Canaan are right next to each other and have similar conditions. Timberline has better trails (in my opinion) than Canaan but their overall conditions should be fairly similar- that being said Timberline is struggling to stay open this year due to some issues with the owners paying bills, etc. Winterplace is not that great in my opinion- it wasn't bad to have an hour away when I was growing up in Charleston for ski club but it just doesn't compare to the other three. It is a very good place to take beginner skiers though.
Love Snowshoe's cheap season passes (if you buy early enough) and typically better conditions than the rest of the region. We've been skipping the tiny NC resorts and hit up 'shoe far more frequently. Plenty of beginner terrain for my fiance, while there's still enough advanced and intermediate terrain to keep me entertained.
Wisp (not WV but close by) and Canaan are really nice too. Haven't done Timberline yet. Winterplace is a little better than our NC ski areas but not that great.
