I'm looking at retirement in early 2021 and moving the wife, dogs, and myself to WV. Aside from an enlistment in the service, we've lived in central PA most all our lives, but have some WV experience. Her maternal grand father lived out his last years near Logan, we visited him and saw a good amount of the state on our visit and found the country side to our liking and the folks were simply wonderful. Also we're somewhat familiar with Martinsburg though we don't want to retire to that area, it's too much like what we want to move away from.

Being retired, jobs won't be a concern. We're more concerned with tax's and living cost. Of course at our age, medical facilities within an hour drive would be a plus. a small single story dwelling on a few acres is what we're looking at getting. What areas would be recommended?

First rate medical facilities are available in Huntington, Charleston, and Morgantown. Draw your one hour circles on a map and start looking.

We were looking at real estate last night and think the area close to the Mononghela National Forrest looks about right to us. No large cities in WV though, Harrisonburg or Winchester VA seem the closest.

Looking through some home listings I see HOA quite a bit, how common are home owner associations in WV? I'm hoping it's just something the realtors list as a standard thing and they're actually non-existant in WV.

There are some HOAs around but they are the exception and not the rule. To give you an idea of how West Virginia is structured with land onwership, you can still live off-grid and save all the water that flows onto your property or falls from the sky. You can hunt your property without a license, although you are limited to the same kill number as someone with a license. For deer that is a maximum of three per year. Most other game has no season, so bang away.

West Virginia is the sort of place where you are very free. Enjoy.

That's why I love the place and want to move there! Oh and I'll mention when we visited my wife's grandfather in the Logan area we found the people the most friendly and wonderful anywhere! I do think West Virginia is "Almost Heaven".

I believe this is being phased out over the next three years for those whose income is less than $100,000.

However, even my accountant has not received definitive information from the State Tax Office as to exactly how the $100,000 income limit will be defined/interpreted.

Aren't they looking to change that in the legislature?
