I'm heading East by motorcycle in September, and plan to spend a few days in WV, getting to know the area and research possible retirement spots. I love Idaho-but our winters are too danged long (for a biker!) and COL has gotten stupid. Plan to spend a night in Morgantown, loop around through Hot Springs, and spend a day or 2 in Beckley (which I have been recommended for retirement). Anyway, what are some great things to see/do? And are there any especially nice motorcycle roads through the state?

Thanks in advance.

Morgantown to Hot Springs will be a nice motorcycle route. Follow the recommendation of Google Maps by taking Rt 119 down to Elkins then Rt 250 out of Elkins. I suggest staying on 250 all the way into Monterey and get on Rt 220 all the way to Hot Springs.

If you want to go off that route. Outside of Elkins in a little town called Huttonsville, take 219 south down to Snowshoe Mountain Resort. This is another great motorcycle route. From Snowshoe you can cross over to Cass, WV and take a break by riding a coal-fired train into the mountains and back. You could also venture up to Green Bank Observatory and see the giant satellites before venturing down to Marlinton and cross over 39 to Warm Springs where you pick up 220 above Hot Springs.

Through those mountains, you can also side track from Elkins up to Canaan Valley and Blackwater Falls for some more WV Beauty.

Good luck and enjoy the trip!

Thanks for the advice and I apologize for the delayed response. I'll plan on hitting that loop! Really looking forward to seeing the state.

If you make it to Berkely springs be sure you don't miss the road to Great Cacapon. There is a boat landing at the bottom of the hill on the river near a cool old railroad bridge there that is worth a look.
