I have never personally lived there, but I have visited on several occasions. The area they call "Out the Pike" is really nice, and seemingly affordable. Woodsdale, Pleasanton, and Dimmydale have wonderful housing options in totally safe neighborhoods, and they are close enough to parks and other amenities. Wheeling Park is nearby, and Oglebay is absolutely splendid.
Off topic, but Elby's Wheeling locations were really good. I miss them big time. The Boury family ran them..? Good people and they did so so much for the distance race in Wheeling from the beginning (1977) until they bowed out 15 or so years later.
It makes me sad that my mom is in Weirton - all the tons of gambling places, they got rid of the closest grocery store, etc.
What are you talking about? They closed the downtown Kroger but that place was a dump and was on the verge of closing anyway. I can only assume you are specifically referring to downtown as there are plenty of stores if you leave downtown (which is a crap area to begin with). As far as the gambling joints go, meh, that's everywhere in the tri-state. Not saying I like them but you see them everywhere and not just there.
This one of the coolest businesses in Wheeling. At Center Market. Almost too cool for Wheeling. A wonderfully decorated, calming oasis. https://www.undertheeldertree.com/
