Metso, a division of Kvaerner Power in Fairmont, Wv just set up a cnc machine. They are doing a lot of the stainless for the 3 new coal fired, fluidized bed boiler, power plants that are under construction.
The machine was set up about 2 months ago and they were interviewing for operators...
Head guy is Chuck Kuretza...phone number is 304-534-4219
Would be a very good company to intern with, as they are cutting edge and international..

Huntington is typically a good place for this type of work due to the steel mills still in operation here. There's Special Metals, Steel of West Virginia and Huntington Steel all in Huntington and then there's AK Steel just across the river in KY. Because of these factories, there are also a lot of machine shops in the area. Here are some links that you may find helpful. There are also a lot of machine shops in the area that aren't listed due to being in some of the outlying areas. There is also a Robert C. Byrd Institute for Advance Flexible Manufacturing that may be of some use. Hope this helps. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Wow! Thank you for all the informational links! Apparently my fiancee's family came from West Virginia from way back. Supposedly a member of her family had a falling out with his business partner and burned down the lumber mill. That family fled in the middle of the night and moved..eventually ended up in Kansas where most of his descendants live today. Some live in Colorado, Idaho, and Montana. Supposedly that person also was a stone mason or some such and built the school for the deaf (some buildings) and we're deaf ourselves. We're thinking of making a honeymoon trip there for her to check up on family trees....etc.
