As a young nation, our forefathers sweat blood to harvest the soil and bring forth it's bounty.
We sit in retrospect and watch, many of us, possessing a rich knowledge of those fleeting skills. Perhaps we could catalog some of that knowledge here.
It is spring and time to till the soil and ready it for the planting. I turned over our garden plot about two days ago.
I worked into that soil a measured part of horse manure and some lime. Why did I do that?
The lime will season and sweeten the soil and the manure carries enzimes and nutrients that need to be replenished.
A secret ingredient will be broadcast by hand over that plot before I plant it...Epson Salts. Grandad did that and it always worked to bring in the best of everything.
Don't ask me how much of anything...It's a feeling thing...

We dig all of our gardens by hand so that we don't kill as many worms.
Most of the gardening reference books we use are from Rodale. Most of them have water damage from sitting out on the back table while we are trying to work in the garden before it starts raining!

I tilled my neighbor's garden last Saturday, then decided to resurrect my own plot, which has been neglected for five or six years. So now I guess I better go get some corn seed and tomato plants.
While I was at it, I tilled a 15x200ft strip out by the road... gonna order a couple of pounds of wildflower seeds for out there.
I've already put 50 lbs of Kenebeck potatoes in the ground and will probably do 3 plantings of corn, 2 dozen tomato plants and 5 or 6 summer squash plants. I always plant zinnas around the border of my garden to hide the weeds.......lol. Mom and Dad always planted zinnas along the upper edge of our garden when I was a kid and I do it for old times sake.
Snorpus: I wanted to ask...that 15' x 200' strip of ground? Planting any grain seed and sunflower for the birds?
A cheap way to do that is to plant leftover birdseed, some bags have everything in them.
And Homersboy, those Zinnias repel a lot of bugs....deer hate them too. What corn varities are you planting?
I'm getting bean poles ready...not like the old days with rics a mile long but a network of sturdy poles and wire fencing...eventually a canopy over part of the tomatoes.
David, I plant Golden Queen and Silver Queen together. It crosses and and produces either striped ears or light yellow ears but never will you get an all white ear.
David, I planted popcorn once that I can remember. I don't know what variety it was but I can remember the ears were raspberry colored.
