HL- a great post and a good read. I wish I had your eloquence in my replies. I'll get my joy by proxy, knowing it's a fellow former NY'er.

GHO- I'm happy that the younger generation in involved and voting, but what are you voting for? Don't forget to read the owners manual so you know how it's supposed to work (READ THE CONSTITUTION!).

R- "What does that make us?" Fools, lemmings, idiots, sheep... We see the train coming at us, but we're too doped up on entertaining TV to get out of the way.

Sheesh. No wonder Obama can't get a fair shake. He's got a legion of condescending dolts fouling his platform.

I have used lemmings and sheep, but never fools . . asleep at the wheel is probably more accurate. Verbiage is a constant struggle, but I'll work on it.

This is just one (1) issue.

Even when congress busts up monopolies, often the funding structure outlets have are derived from.... corporations. So, even if a primary owner is in agreement with free speech, if the sponsor doesn't care for what a reporter is reporting, they can pull their ads (financially punishing the TV/Radio station or magazine/newspaper over freedom of speech).

Concentration of media ownership - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Murdoch took it to a whole new level dictating what the news will be, what gets ignored wholesale, and what to repeat and emphasize. Ex reporters won a wrongful termination lawsuit against fox news years back, which was overturned in florida appeals court basically saying-- fox in no way is obliged to tell the truth. They can lie if they want. So much for journalism standards. There used to be a wikipedia article about it that I tried to post but it mysteriously disappeared....

Fox News Channel controversies - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"Wikipedia edits
In August 2007 a new utility, Wikipedia Scanner, revealed that Wikipedia articles relating to Fox News had been edited from IP addresses owned by Fox News, though it was not possible to determine exactly who the editors were. The tool showed that self-referential edits from IP ranges owned by corporations and news agencies were not uncommon.[60] Fox edits received attention in the blogosphere and on some online news sites. Wikipedia articles edited from Fox computers from 2005 through 2007 included Al Franken, Keith Olbermann, Chris Wallace and Brit Hume.[61][62]"

It's not enough for conservatives to have their voices heard? They feel entitled to tamper with or eradicate recorded facts? Rupert Murdoch owns not only standard media outlets all over the world like fox news, but also DirectTV, the parent company of myspace, and the dow jones.
"In 1999, The Economist reported that Newscorp Investments (parent company of fox news) had made £1.4 billion ($2.1 billion) in profits over the previous 11 years but had paid no net corporation tax. It further reported, after an examination of what was available of the accounts, that Newscorp would normally have expected to pay a corporate tax of approximately $350 million. The article explained that the corporation's complex structure, international scope and use of offshore havens allowed News Corporation to avoid taxation.[33][34]"

Rupert is a legal immigrant who established citizenship to satisfy FCC requirements for his business, but it would appear his primary objective is to decide how the american people will vote with propaganda/mind control techniques.

This is what it meant to WV for the last election...
"Moody on Senator John Kerry (D-MA):
Kerry, starting to feel the heat for his flip-flop voting record, is in West Virginia. There's a near-meaningless primary in Illinois (3/16/04)."

Did Ruppert Murdoch decide McCain will win WV this year?

The younger generation is very involved. All over campus students are talking about the election and how we have to vote to keep the mistakes of 2000 and 2004 from happening again.

We are voting for what we believe in, and what we think is right. We are concerned about health care - many of us lost our insurance after our junior year of college when we turned 21. Got kicked off our parents’ insurance policies. What are we supposed to do if something happens before we graduate? We are concerned about JOBS! We've spent years and lots of $$$ bettering ourselves, will the economy of the United States actually be afloat when we graduate? We care about individual rights! My generation more than any generation before is comfortable with gay marriage, and women’s abortion rights. We are not scared of "change". Quite frankly I think if we don't change the United States will end up being left behind by all the other super powers.

We also don't like the fact that for the last 6-8 years Bush and his congress has spent billions on a futile war brought on by lies, killed thousands of Americans and over 100,000 civilians in the middle east, bankrupted our country, made the rich richer and the poor poorer, ruined our education system (No Child Left Behind)

I understand there are people out there that don't like the idea of gay marriage or abortions or stem cell research. Most of who are just scared of change and mostly the older crowd. I commend these people for sticking to "their" morals. However, you have been fooled. Is that really the important thing in this country? Whether gays can get married and if a woman can get an abortion? Bush promised legislation that would not favor gay rights or abortion rights in exchange for your vote. You voted for him, he was elected and he ran our country in the ground. Is it really worth that much to you for gays to not get married that you would sacrifice your country financial stability over?

I have actually read the constitution, I did so my 2nd semester of college when I was actually a political science major. I'm not seeing the relevancy there though? Is there something I'm missing? I don't think it says anything about becoming a regressive country and one that denies rights to its citizens and gives them to the "normal" ones.

Time will only tell

AHH! GHO...THE OLD LIBERAL MANTRA...when I was in college it was World Peace and Saving the Whales...still sounds the same...are their any new people involved? or is it the same old losers parading around...

One of ours, still touting the communist line at age 72 and trying to influence the young in his classes said to me last week, "I went down to DC to protest and could not even get arrested...!" I said, "Paul, they saw you were a senior citizen...the hippy days are over."

Somebody asked me last night if I read the Wall Street Journal, replied, not since the owner of Fox News bought it.

I learned a new word today, "bloodless coup".

Michael Powell (son of Colin), former FCC Chairman.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Powell_(politician)

"Let's look at one specific decision you took when you allowed, you, the Commission, allowed Rupert Murdoch's news corporation, which owns the Fox Network, to go ahead and acquire 10 more television stations around the country. That gave it 41 percent of the market, rather than the cap of 35 -- and you granted a waiver for that. And it gave him two television stations, and, of course, he owns a newspaper in New York City . . "
-- PBS Interview with Michael Powell, August 2001

Catch that %?

Media Giants: Who owns what?

T&A: Media Ownership: Who owns what?

Relevancy -- there is a convenient excuse I've heard from the media at large regarding journalism and content, "Ultimately, we are responsible to our shareholders", or some similar phrasing. The question is rhetorical, who are the shareholders?

Or perhaps this quote says it better : "When the story does appear, the key questions not only go unanswered, they go unasked."

Didn't know I was now a loser for being a liberal... hmm makes sense though since I think conservativs (beeeeeeeep beep beeeeeeeeeeeep beeep) ha ha

and since when is world peace and saving the whales a bad thing? Should we just embrace war and slaughtering of all animals???

There are conservatives in college; it’s not just a bunch of liberals running around. I've said it before and I'll say it again, I've had conservative professors as much as I've had liberals. Is it that the liberal profs are better at brain washing? or just maybe perhaps I use my own brain to form my own opinions?

The guy that wanted to be arrested clearly is just out to cause trouble. But do I need to remind everyone that both sides clearly have people like that.

I was a liberal too...when I was in the Marines...66'/69'...respect your opinion and right to bear it.

Saving the Whales and World Peace are/were efforts in misdirection...our work was here in this country and its education system...we let it go and failed it...failed an entire generation...lost our ethics for the most part...you will see it when you leave Marshall and go out beyond the borders of Wv.
