There are few parks for those people in those area and few gyms. Those who can have to come to Huntington for parks and exercise as there are few opportunities in those areas. Huntington has one of the highest numbers of parks in WV and also has the second highest number of people who walk to work in WV. There are lots of local initiatives like Walk it up! and Healthy Huntington to try to fix these problems so to suggest, as the author did, that people here are just saying "Oh well, who cares" is totally false. Here's another article from a gentleman who is leading the charge locally trying to change these things about what he wanted the author to put into the story but it of course didn't make it.

I'm fully aware that the obesity problem isn't limited to Huntington which is why I referenced seeing it elsewhere both in WV and in rural southern areas. The article however was talking Huntington (MSA included) which is why this thread got started in the first place and why I included it in my post.

You seem to have a lot of good information on healthy alternatives in Huntington...maybe you could write a letter to the editor and set him straight.

That's the thing though, the author talked to the people who are responsible for these health initiatives but he only picked out the things he wanted. They gave him the info on these initiatives but he chose to either leave them out altogether or make a passing mention of them at best. Doesn't make the story quite as interesting if the people are actually trying to do something about it. Also makes them seem more ignorant if they 1) don't recognize the problem or 2) don't care enough to do anything about it. This seems to be the tone he was going for. He also didn't mention that the 45% stat from 2006 was way out of line for previous years and for 2007. Takes away some of the drama of the story if the rate has already dropped 13% in one year, which it has as the rate was 32% for 2007. If you only present part of the story, it makes for more dramatic effect and exaggerates things more if you don't present the other side.
