You and I sound a lot alike, as I just moved my family to Hurricane in July (our first son was born in August). Anyway, this is an extremely family-oriented community. Additionally, Chrleston and Huntington ("big" cities) are only 20 minutes away. We looked at older homes that were on the market and found that we could build exactly what we wanted for the same price, so we built. If you'd like the name of my builder and development, send me an e-mail / private message and I'll be happy to help you out any way that I can. Good luck...

I'm looking to relocate to WV from Virginia simply because I want a more simple, laid back lifestyle in the mountain's with my family and raise my son in a GOOD environment. I am in Richmond now after growing up 22 miles south of there and have grown tired of the hussle and bussle and having to pay through the nose for everything. To put it simply....

Teays Valley is pretty hustle-bustle although on a tiny scale compared to Richmond.
It's also not very mountainous. If you hop across the river in Putnam County you will find more hills/mountains and more laid back, but may be too laid back. Putnam County on the 2 sides of the river are about as opposite as night and day.

Neeny,
The Hurricane and Teays Valley areas are great place to raise kids. As a former educator, I know that the schools are top of the line in both academics and sports. Secondly, being in between 2 metro areas(Huntington and Charleston) is ideal for job availability. The only drawback for some is the traffic situatuion but a new exit/entrance ramp has been put in in Scott Depot to help alleviate some of the traffic so that helps. Also, you might to look into the Culloden area as well. Should you want an easy and comprehensive search for homes then check out my website: WWW.NETBRET.COM it's all listings with pictures, blogs and other helpful tips.
