This may be one of the most unusual requests made here for the members, but it seems like a lot of knowledgable people are here and I really don't know where else to go to get the insider info I need. This decision is too life altering to be made without as much information as possible.

I am a man on disability and I have a strong desire to move to West Virginia based on what I've heard about the cost of living, its people, climate and all of its beauty. There is a lot of information about the state on the web but I need a more "personalized" version.

I am interested in finding a small to medium sized town/city to move to. I enjoy living in smaller towns, but I do need to have access to nearby doctors, grocery stores and things of that nature. One of my biggest concerns is the fact that I am on a fixed income due to my disability and I need to find a location where I can find affordable rent that may have utilities included in the rent. The reason for this is that it is so much easier for me to budget my monthly bills if I do not have to worry about the electric and heat and such.

Another big factor, and I know this may seem odd to some, but my life is pretty much spent inside my house/apartment. That being said, my social network is basically on the internet at this point in my life. It is very important that I have access to high speed internet where ever I may live. Also important would be cable tv. I know these may seem like "luxuries" to some people but they honestly are what I live for considering the circumstances of my life at this time.

In closing a basically need a low cost of living in a relatively safe area. An efficiency or inexpensive 1 bedroom apartment is fine for me. If any of you could point me to a city that would be a good "fit" for someone like me I'd really appreciate the help.

Thanks so much for your help and time.

You might want to look into the Elkins area in Randolph County.

there are a few apartments for the disabled/elderly in the New Martinsville area. It is a small town but it does have a super WalMart (open 24 hours), several restaurants, hardware stores, gas stations, doctors, a hospital, banks, theater, several dollar stores, bowling alley, city cab co. car dealers, a marina, swimming pool, & it is located along the Ohio River so there is access to fishing there as well. Not a lot of crime & several denominations of churches as well as senior citizen services. You can also get access to the VA hospital throught van service as well as an eye doctor (specialist) if needed. Hope this helps some.

Default WV Native

Okie,

Since you are diabled and mostly homebound, I would make two suggestions.

Morgantown area and Charleston area.

Why? you stated the most important item, medical care and affordability.
If Medical was a concern without cost of living, I would tell you to go reside in Winchester or Charlottesville, VA but the cost will put ya under unless you have 300+K for a small home.

Charleston being the capital is beautiful with the capital building, New River and the surrounding mountains. (Union Carbide on the West side excluded)
Also, West By God is the last of the states with total centralized government so all tax revenue from the 55 counties go to the central coffer for distribution, thus Charleston's infrastructure.

Morgantown (Home of Don Knotts/Barney Fife) has WVU, a full University hospital and close to Pittsburgh incase a vital emergency happens, plus Morgantown is affordable.

Good Luck,

I raised my children in Fort Ashby,WV and also lived in Ridgeley,WV. I would strongly recommend you consider Ridgeley, WV. This is a small town on the Potomac River that borders Cumberland Maryland. You have all the amenities of a small town but you are 500 ft from the Maryland border and a medium town called Cumberland. The health care system and Railroad are the largest employers in Cumberland, MD. Ridgeley is a beautiful town where the cost of living is low. I paid 350.00 per month for a 2 story 3 bedroom 2 bath duplex for the 5 years I lived there. The people are great and the Mayor is a close personal friend of mine who works for the people of Ridgeley. Ridgeley has a lot of ol'timers in it and is very quiet. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!! Good Luck

I too would suggest Morgantown. We have WVU/Ruby Memorial Hospital and Pittsburgh is only an hour away.

Housing is affordable here and there are a few Apartment complexes that rent according to income for those living on a fixed income <Marjorie Gardens and Brookview Apartments>.

High speed cable is readily available in this area also. Morgantown is a college town <home of the WVU Mountaineers>.

Good luck in your search!

I have lived in WV my whole life and completely agree that Charleston and Morgantown are two of the best options in WV. They both have outstanding hospitals. Morgantown has recently been rated as one of the countrys best small cities. It is growing faster than any other city in the state. Elkins and Buckhannon are nice but you are removed from everything. They have a rural feel. A lot of people purchase their weekend homes there since most of the ski resorts are near Elkins...Timberland and Canaan Ski Resorts.

Housing is more affordable in Charleston but have been told that the people in Morgantown, Clarksburg, Fairmont area are more friendly. Fairmont is the most affordable of the three cities listed.
