Hi everyone,
So my husband is being transferred to Columbia MD for his job. We have been looking at the area and are bit nervous about living in MD. My husband is very pro gun, so you could understand his concern. We were trying to figure out if the commute to Columbia would be miserable or not? He is OK with about an hour or a bit more each way, but stretching into 2-3hrs each way will be too much, no matter how uncomfortable we are. Google maps is of no help bc it only adds 10min to rush hour and I doubt that is accurate.
Also what is the healthcare like there? My son is special needs and will need a decent doctor, but most of his specialist care will be provided by John Hopkins. He will only need to travel there a few times a months and I can work his appointments to avoid rush hour, and hopefully be able to arrange more than a few at some satellite offices near Frederick.
Is this too big a commute to be happy with? Whats life like there? Thanks.

I am probably not well qualified to answer this post because I have driven in this area only a few times but from what I understand the connections between Charlestown and anywhere east is terrible by design. The roads are either too small to keep them from being throughways or they have speed traps dotting them or probably both. If it were me, I don't mind a bit longer drive if it is easier and I would travel by interstate the whole way and live in Martinsburg or somewhere along I-81 in WV so that I could drive north a short distance and then connect with I-70 south of Hagerstown and head into the Baltimore area.
It actually isn't bad at all...the only area of the commute on roads that are "small" is from Harpers Ferry over the two bridges into MD. From there the commute is on highway the whole way be it on 340/15 or on I70.

Depends on when you leave...340 is quite easy in the morning to Frederick. I have heard of minor issues on I70 only once you get closer to Columbia. Coming home usually you will have backups through Frederick and then through the single lane from MD to Harpers Ferry. I would say about 90 minutes if you hit moderate traffic....around an hour or slightly above in limited traffic

Thanks that helps A LOT!!! That makes me feel much better about a WV choice. Do you live there? Whats life like in the area? Crime? How are the people? Anything you can add would be great. Thanks again.
This commute can be horrendous. I would bet on 3-4 days a week where it's at least two hours.
But hey if guns are more important than being near quality healthcare for your child and more impotant than spending time with the family instead of sitting in traffic 4 hours every day, it's an absolutely wonderful opportunity for you!

I never said guns were more important than my son, that is just silly. The reason I'm here is to ask if it is a REASONABLE commute. You could have responded thusly, without criticizing my opinions. I never said we detested living in MD, just we were looking at our options. Johnny Hopkins has tons of satellite offices all around MD including Frederick and Hagerstown and many other places all over. We live 3hrs from our closest Children's hospital here in WA and my son has never missed an apppointment bc of that. We lived here before he was born and couldn't move after. A parent will always make a way for their children, so your assumption is just silly.
I asked about the commute and thank you for giving your opionion, it helps me to figure out if WV is an option. Do you make the commute yourself? Is the 2hr the norm? That may be too much, so thanks.

I realize this isn't answering your question... and I don't want to get too far off-topic...
But I don't understand what the concern is with living in Columbia MD. From all I've heard it's a great place to live (other than traffic concerns). Are there anti-gun laws there or something? I'm not a gun owner, so forgive my naivete if I'm missing something obvious here.
