My four children and I are planning on moving to West Va. Our first choice is Philippi because I have some family there who can help me with my children. Specifically my daughter as she was diagnosed with cancer last year. She is finished with chemo but still has many months of OT and PT. Does anyone have any info on this town and the closest hospitals and rehab therapy pavillions? I do know it's small with a population of about 3800. I am not bothered by this. I am looking to live somewhere relatively quiet, cheap and safe. There isn't much online for this town so I'm just trying to feel it out. I will be going for a visit the first of June but wanted to throw out some feelers.
Thanks you!
Mona

The closest larger towns to Philippi are Elkins and Clarksburg/Bridgeport, both about half an hour away (in opposite directions). The most extensive medical facilities, specialists, etc., will be found in Morgantown, about an hour drive or so.

Snorpus is correct. Morgantown would be the closest place with the most extensive medical facilities. Clarksburg is closer with United Hospital Center, but personally I prefer Ruby or Mon General in Morgantown.

Pittsburgh is the closest major city for north central West Virginia. They have excellent medical facilities there too if Morgantown doesn't have what you need. However, Morgantown's medical specialities is very broad for the size of area.

Thank you both for your prompt replies! I had heard Ruby mentioned a time a two from some friends and this actually this jogged my memory. I definitely want the small town atmosphere but I also don't want to spend to much time driving. Luckily I will not have to work but I plan on attending school and I don't want to spend five days a week driving two hours a day! I'm not not so worried now about good facilities being located hours and hours away! With that out of the way, what does anyone know about Philippi? The pictures on their website are very pretty.

Philippi is a college town...Alderson-Broaddus...nice and small...has a Masters Program..
Downtown area of Main Street is doing well.
Very historical area of Wv...and Arden is the best place to swim and fish...dangerous when the water is high...
Philippi had a little clinic/hospital years ago...I expect it is still there.
Elementary school is new...can't say anything about the others.
School is out, should be a good time to find a rental. Good luck.

Thank you David Kennedy for the info! I did see that A-B was there but it's to expensive for me. I think I'll just transfer my credits into a cheaper college and see what happens. Good to hear about the Elementary school though. I have two teenagers and two grade schoolers. What is the high school like out that way or are they bused out?

Davis Memorial Hospital in Elkins has a cancer care center as well as UHC in Clarksburg. Those are the nearest cities with the medical services you may need. Philippi has a small hospital affiliated with Davis Health Systems in Elkins. In all honestly I can't recommend anything in Barbour County for someone with kids. The drug problem there is out of control. So many kids from my generation have passed away as a result of the drugs in the county. My aunt lives in Belington and even my cousin has passed away due to an overdose. So I honestly would either go to Elkins or Clarksburg/Bridgeport

my 2 cents, years back,my grand parents lived in philippi. it was an awesome town.120 sumit lane is where they lived. visited there with my dad,he graduated from high school there. a lot of pride there ,not only about philippi, but about west virginia ,in general. the reason i remember the adress so well is i was in the marines, and would write to them regular, and them to me.i dont know about all the drugs, and what not.now, but there was a little shine being made here and there ,lol.guess what im trying to say is ,its a town with a lot of memories for me.and i hope its as good or better for you . ive been all over the world.and saw some amazing sites, but that little store before the bridge, and then the left to sumit lane are etched deep. good luck, and im sorry about the cancer,i hope you win the battle.

I can't tell you much about the High School...Philippi-Barbour.
Many of these rural schools have drug problems.
It's the invisible problem that nobody wants to address and mom (and if their is a dad...might be 'pot heads too)...

There's money in the drug trade and it is diverse. Takes anyones money at any time.

I would take those concerns directly to the Principal and ask him...

What's usually done is to bring the drug dogs thru once a week and shake down the student body...after a while, they keep their stuff off campus.

This drug problem is part of the systemic demise of our country...much the same as the English supply of Opium to China from 1850 to 1950...
It's here to stay, and it's part of the liberal agenda to weaken and control our population, both medically and socially.
