What's the nearest airport to Martinsburg, WV? Also, what is the best area to live in near the VA Medical Center?

Closest major airport would be Dulles, I would think.

Not sure if the airport in Winchester VA has commercial service.

Best airport would be Baltimore International...

But BWI is probably close to an hour farther away than Dulles...

The ease of operation...and being the fact that a person can tune into the Baltimore airport radio frequency and be guided to their destination overrides the travel...I hate driving to Dulles, unless we take the back roads. I hate the Beltway with those 500,000 Philipinos driving wildly...the exit and the toll ramps...and the confusion is literally breathtaking as everyone is driving to Hell as fast as possible because they are late.
The 900 million dollar subway for 9 miles will be worth it.

Give me BWI anytime. It's just too easy and its patterned after the best airports, Portland, Detroit, Miami style.

Remember, the OP asked "from Martinsburg", so he could take the back way in, avoiding the Beltway.

Default Right up my ally`

I travel to the area 4-6 times per year to check on my relatives, which are in their golden years.

Shortest is Dulles, which I travel the vast majority of the time. Sometimes you do have to watch the pricing on flights. Best is Airtran depending of course where you are coming from and if they reside in your area.

If you want to travel to Martinsburg, but yet would like to take your time and enjoy sights I suggest BWI. BWI is much easier to if you have a rental car and NOT familiar with the area as the roads and highways are marked clearly, this is something that is not equalized at Dulles.

Washington National, now Reagan is the worst. Far away and a pain the hiney.

Don't forget one other one to check price on which folks who do not travel much forget about. Harrisburg PA. Sometimes you can grab, again depending on where you live, get direct cheap flights into Harrisburg. Then just take the Turnpike a couple exits and drop onto I-81 south.

Mileage wise: Depending on route
Dulles to Martinsburg - 45-55 miles
BWI to Martinsburg - 95 miles
Harrisburg to Martinsburg 85-95 miles

One last word of advice, if flying in during the week. Arrive from 10-2pm and depart at the same time for Dulles and BWI. Easy in, easy out, no rush hour. And an old travelers secret, you get better seats

I think BWI is better than Dulles, even though it is further away, IMHO. There is also a connecting flight between Hagerstown and BWI provided by Cape Air - Welcome to Cape Air (http://www.flycapeair.com/common/index.php?lng=ENG&div=AA&nav=AA&page=A01 - broken link)

Dulles,

Take Rt 9 to Rt 7, hop on 267, the Dulles Toll road (which is free if you're going to the airport).

No Beltway necessary, and it's much closer than BWI.

How "good" one airport is over the other is open to interpretation; but, my advice is, if you can get your flight out of Dulles and are coming from Martinsburg, then use that airport.

No idea about trying to hop in from Hagerstown, but it seems like that would be even more of a hassle (driving up to Hagerstown, waiting for the flight, etc, if they even have little flights to go the 60 miles from Hagerstown to Dulles).

Literally speaking, the closest airport (General Aviation and National Guard) to Martinsburg, is Shepherd Field, but it has practically no use for you if you're asking about commercial flights.
