My mother swears that she and her brothers and sisters saw many black panthers in the back woods of West Virginia in the 1930s-1940s ... big as or bigger than a Rottweiler dog - there have been many people that claim to have seen them. I've heard the "screaming like a woman" .. but that also might be bobcats.
Hey guys,OP here with an update to this 10 yr.old thread.Recently my older brother has moved into this secluded mountain cabin, about 8 weeks ago,he called me ,telling me about an hour ago to tell me about a black panther he saw yesterday. It was no less than (he estimates only 100 ft.)a black panther watching him from behind a pile of brush,it moved to another pile of brush, watched him for about 10 seconds, leaped at least 10 ft up a tree, stayed there for about 1 min. Came back down the tree, and slowly walked away.He estimates this cat at about 75 to 85 lbs. Has also seen several adult and baby bobcats.Again, this is on Short Mountain,in Agusta WV.
Interesting thread & TY for reviving it. I'd love to see a Mtn lion in WV when we move back. The are my fav animal, period. The are huge, sleek & cunning hunters. Very smart cats indeed. Here in AZ they are often seen yet I've not seen one wild, in a decade or so being here in the wild.
Have seen in cages but not running wild. I know WV at one time had them but they are extinct now, I think. Alos, Big Black cats that large size really are supposedly jaguars or leopards not true Mtn Lions tho I'm no expert.

To my knowledge there are no recorded cases of melanized Mountain Lions. Jaguars and Leopards? Yes, melanized forms exist, but not Mountain Lions.
That said, I do believe there are occasional cases of big cats in East Coast wooded areas, I have seen some pretty convincing proof. I do not think there is a breeding population though. We live in the days of cell phone cameras and roads. If Mountain Lions had repopulated any areas, you would see fresh paw prints in the woods after it snows; you would see road killed animals. Everyone would have a camera to find and publish this proof.
I would love to be wrong though.........
