North Dakotans Get Best Sleep, West Virginians Worst - The Two-Way - Breaking News, Analysis Blog : NPR
Quote:
The CDC studied the responses of more than 400.000 people in all 50 states, the District of Columbia and three U.S. territories to a survey given in 2008. People were asked if they had insufficient rest or sleep in the preceding 30 days.

Because of the differences between what young adults consider sufficient sleep compared with, say their parents, the researchers adjusted the results for age.

They found that North Dakotans had the fewest complaints about insufficient sleep with only 7.4 percent of them reporting too little sleep or rest in the prior 30 days.
In contrast, West Virginia was the state with the highest percentage of complaints about sleeplessness at 19.3 percent.

It probably won't surprise many that West Coasters -- Californians and Oregonians-- seem to do pretty well on the sleep front, laid back as they are.

The CDC's researchers doesn't hazard a guess as to why so many North Dakotans feel they get enough shut eye and so many West Virginians don't.

The results should get doctors to ask their patients during medical exams if they are getting adequate sleep so docs can make take the necessary next steps in the event they aren't.

Mattress sellers and sleeping-pill makers might also want to use this information to better target their efforts.
I guess with all the cap and trade fervor people can't sleep!
Well after reading that article, I'm going to bed, lol.

I certainly believe this article!!! I miss sleep.. but I can't plan a unit for my classroom tomorrow while I'm asleep, or type those two papers I have due.

Maybe people in WV are harder workers thus less sleep?

Of course on the national news this AM, I heard it's because we are all unhealthy that's why we have sleep problems.

Sleep is over rated. 5 to 6 hours a night and a couple power naps get's me through the work week.

You might want to rethink that philosophy: Sleep Education: Sleep & the H1N1 “Swine Flu” Virus . While the article title suggests the H1N1 virus, the study in general links the entire immune system to sleep amounts, etc.

On the more technical and geeky side, also read: http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases...0902075211.htm , and, http://www.naturalnews.com/026637_health_immune_system_melatonin.html (broken link)

Last night I dreamed a little dog was shipting in my yard. Seemed like everytime I turned around, there was more shipt. How much shipting for a little dog requires an exclamation to get the point across! I realized in the dream, being honest with myself, I'd like to drop kick this little dog into the next century, but since this little dog had a big bowl of food somewhere, explaining so much shipt, the best thing to do was take that big bowl of food away and feed it normally.

"The CDC's researchers doesn't hazard a guess as to why so many North Dakotans feel they get enough shut eye and so many West Virginians don't. "

I can't "hazard a guess" either why I would take this seriously. The CDC has prostituted its credibility to special interests, i.e., drug companies, so the best thing to do is cut funding to it (and the Federal Government, et.al.) until they learn to be normal, which requires something called "honesty".

"Politicians are like diapers . . they both need to be changed often, and for the same reason."

I thought the CDC was more research and 'stuff', not having a whole lot to do with drug companies. I thought that was the domain of the FDA, but I could be wrong.

And I didn't sleep well last night either. Might have something to do with banging down 3/4 plywood all day yesterday. My back be sore.

Point taken. My wife is always on to me about not getting enough sleep.

My problem is that I get home from work at 5:30-6:30pm, have dinner at 7p.m. (and we always sit down for dinner with the kids and go over the day). Then when the kids go to bed at 9, I feel compelled to stay up and do my chores or finish some project or, as is more often the case, start another Godforsaken one.

By the time I'm convinced I've done enough, or screwed one up so badly I've disgusted myself, it's well after midnight and I sleep like crap.

I need to break this cycle and do NOTHING when I get home!
