And the funny thing is so many people really believe such places are "illegal" in Winchester. Ah..check the books there is NO such law in either Winchester or Frederick County, VA that bans such places. Hell Winchester has their own adult bookstore..just like Martinsburg has one. I am not going to mention that long running drive-in theatre just north of Winchester that showed hardcore porn for so many years and nether Winchester or Frederick County did anything at all to stop it, they didn't even try and the only reason why that stopped was because somebody offered big bucks for the land to open up a motorcycle shop. I can tell ya first hand Winchester/Frederick County, Virginia is NOT a "virgin" community

Yes, it is rather pathetic isn't it. I remember years ago when the first Porn Shop opened on Queen Street, which was met with much opposition though won out. Then the trend began. Next was "The Toilet" that opened down the road until a major drug bust shut it down. Then "The Head Shop" up from the book store, then you began with the Booby Bars.
Got to the point with Martinsburg that the joke began. Where can you find Jesus, get a lap dance, and purchase a used car all in one block? Martinsburg!!! Of course Granted, the Burg has always had it's little watering holes like any other small town, but today it's used cars and booby bars no matter which state or county line you cross.

In regard to the commute to Washington DC. Used to do that and the run to Baltimore. After leaving my house at 4:30 am to arrive back at 8pm everyday of the week I found that was not the life for me, however everyone is different. A good fried of mine has been doing it for over 20 years and does not seem to mind.

Definetly, I took the back way to Winchester today, and I discovered that South Berkeley County has a unique method when working with patterns: school, billboard, booby bar, school, billboard, booby bar. Goes back to no zoning and extra mula. Loved the joke, by the way -mmccul

Default Moving to DC area

Hi all,

I am moving to the DC area with my family in late summer and we are looking at the Martinsburg area despite the commute to my office (near 16th and K in DC). My wife homeschools our children and we are moving from a relatively rural area north of Houston, TX, so I wanted to keep the same general feel of lifestyle.

This said, I have two questions. First, we are looking at houses in the downtown area and some are quite beautiful 'handyman specials' that are frighteningly low cost. Has there been some sort of economic meltdown in this part of West Virginia that explains this, or is there some other trend downtown that bears understanding? I have been reading that Martinsburg is revitalizing downtown, so this was something of a surprise (albeit pleasant).

Second, I'm not put off by the driving commute if indeed the MARC train is convenient as it would give me the opportunity to work in both directions. I would be interested to know, however, if the train travel is conducive to getting some work done if wanted? Also, does anyone know if MARC is planning on expanding the number of trains, times into DC in the next couple of years?

Any insight/information on these counts would be greatly appreciated. Thanks very much.

lkm

The MARC train ends at Union Station. From there, you can catch the subway. I commuted from Martinsburg to 7th and D SW for awhile and it was very easy to do.

Each train has quiet car which is great if you want to read/sleep/work without being disturbed.

There are proposed plans to expand the MARC service, but, I don't know what the status of the plans are, beyond the proposal phases.

You can see the proposal here

Here's the schedule for the MARC train: Maryland Transit Administration (http://mta.maryland.gov/services/marc/schedulesSystemMaps/Brunswick_sched.cfm - broken link)

Here's a map of the DC subway system: Metro - Rail

Hope this helps you out.
