Here's a very good article in the New York Times about a small town in Putnam County and how people endured hard times during the depression and to present date. For those of you that don't know, Eleanor was named after Eleanor Roosevelt. I live within a mile of Eleanor and know all of the people mentioned here. Don't forget to click on the audio slide show link, Remembering Eleanor. There's lots of history there as well as in her sister city, Arthurdale. I normally don't read this paper but I really like this story.
