I have heard Martinsburg is a growing place with lots of opportunity.
I am looking for somewhere with a decent entertainment and music scene, and bigger cities nearby.
Is this for me?

Martinsburg is growing, but only in the quantity of homes.
It has become a bedroom community for Washington DC.
Outside of a train ride to Washington the job opportunities are few and far between. Of course you can get a job that will pay about half of what it costs to live there.

The nightlife and music scene consist of a few local bars/dives.

Growing up there in the 60's and 70's there was opportunity. Corning Glass, General Motors, DuPont, Martin Marietta, etc., low crime, Norman Rockwell.
Today, all the above except for a small force at GM is gone. Of course, this can also be called a national problem. Downtown today has also changed. Buildings are old with not much in the way of renovation, there is a rather new Police Department on Queen Street complete with a Porno shop across the street, and crime is on the rise.

I would suggest a quick visit, with your question I have a feeling that is all it would take to make up your mind.

I've been looking at the Berkeley Co. area too as I've been thinking about trying for a job in Hagerstown and wanted to stay in WV.I've been living in Parkersburg for a few years, taking a job to get my wife closer to her folks in Charleston and Ohio, after moving from Cumberland,MD.Nothing wrong with this area but it's not home.Having also lived in Hampshire Co. and near Culpeper,VA I've got had the itch to get back. However after reading some of the stuff about the Martinsburg area I don't know now.It seems to be like the Culpeper area is now another D.C. subburb with high property rates. How are the area's like Hedgesville or Falling Waters now? haven't been there for awhile.

Check out Morgan county.. Berkeley Springs... Very nice towns and areas there. If Martinsburg isn't your thing, which I suggest touring. You may find you like it. But if its not, check our Morgan county.

Berkeley Springs and Morgan County are much better than Martinsburg/Berkeley.
Actually, Jefferson/Harpers Ferry/ Shepherdstown have done much in the improvement process.

Are Jefferson/Berkeley Counties rural or suburban?
Is the developement massive or relative?
Thanks.

Culpepper IS NOT suburban, it is RURAL.
The place is 75 miles from DC, not at all suburban.
People think everytime 1-2 subdivisoons come it means the area's character has changed, it has slightly been altered but is still way out there.
Fauquier is rural so why would something 25 miles past it be a suburb?

About Culpeper I think it has more of a Northern VA feel to it anymore.Lots of traffic in town and on 29.Lots of commuters from the D.C.area and lots of people buying up property from that area. The locals in that area can't afford to buy unless they have a really good job.My grandmother who sold a house and some property in one of the smaller areas near Culpeper just 3 years ago for $179,000 now has seen the same house and land for sale for $425,000!! Having been in different parts of West Virginia now Culpeper just doesn't seem so rural.

Jefferson is becoming more surburban, Berkeley is trying to be but can't lose the Banjo mindset.
Jeff is 50 miles to DC. Berkeley 65 miles to DC.
Martinsburg does offer one thing that will qualify as Urban,,,, Crime!
