Howdy all:

Fiddlehead the Oregonian again. I love playing guitar and singing (I don't do either very well), but keep muddling along. I was in Ireland a couple years back and just loved how folks would jump up to sing, dance, play music, and just "homebrew" their own music.

What is the scene like for that in West Virginia? Where are the places to hear music, and how often do folks "grow their own" music in general? Any cool gatherings or events around Morgantown? Bear in mind, I am no hippy or hipster musician, just a family man, but I love the fine celtic arts of conversation, a good song, poem, joke, or story. Are they a big part of the West Virginia culture?

Also check out Mountain Stage, it is for local performers. Shows are aired on public radio: Mountain Stage - Where Musicians Come to Play

Thanks folks! I have been listening to Mountain Stage for years. I did not recall it was from Morgantown. A big plus!

Well, a lot of Mountain Stage is in Charleston, 150 miles south. But it does travel to Morgantown.

I attended one of those at the Clay Center. That is an absolutely beautiful facility. I saw the Kronos Quartet there, too.

I forgot about Rhythm and Brews, too. It's a decent bar...an older crowd. WVU basketball star Deniz Kilicli was there last night getting his Hendrix on. There's a video on Facebook.

If you're into old time music then you're in luck. There are plenty of old time jams all around that would be more then happy to let you join. Usually involving banjo, guitar, fiddle, mandolin and sometimes harmonica

Sounds great! I love the fiddle especially, but cannot play myself. Guitar only, but perhaps could take up the banjo sometime.

Is old time the same as bluegrass or slightly different somehow? Just curious.
