Will be in the area in a few days. I see they offer a 2hr and a 4hr trip. Which would you recommend? Is there anything special to look for?

It depends on how much time you have. If you have the time, take the 4 hour trip. You'll want to catch the museum and old county store. (which of course still sells trinkets to take home).

You'll want to walk into town (5-10 minute walk) to look at the refurbished cottages the workers used. (you can now stay in them yourself).

You'll want to walk down to the river. It's a beautiful view looking back up the river. Figure 1.5 to 2 hours for the things outside of the ride and decide how much time you have. If you enjoy trains or incredible views, it's a can't miss ride.

The 2 hour trip gets you only partly up the mountain. The 4 hour trip, to either Bald Knob (most days) or Spruce (Fridays), gets you to the top... from Bald Knob you can look *down* on the dishes in Green Bank. It's the 2nd or 3rd highest point in the Allegheny Mountains; Spruce was the highest location on a mainline railroad east of the Rockies.

As said above, take the longer ride if time permits... even more fun is to stay overnight in one of the restored company houses. (I just made reservations to stay overnight in the caboose atop Bald Knob.)

That would be cool. I've wanted to for a long time but I've just never worked it out yet.

We've talked about doing it for years too, finally decided to do it before we get too old to consider it.

Just be aware that the Friday run is to Spruce (which is interesting in its own right) and not Bald Knob, which is where you get to look down at Green Bank and most of western Virginia.

I did the 2 hour with my girls and it was more than enough. Just be advised that it is hard to find food and lodging in the area. We ended up at Snowshoe Resort, which is actually nice, but out of the way. Also, you can't use a cell phone in much of that area (or maybe any of it) due to the Big Ear at Green Bank. http://www.nrao.edu/
