My family and I are looking to buy a house in a nice Westchester suburb. We're considering Yorktown Heights, but would like more options. We're a nice, hardworking middle-class family. We have 2 kids and would like a great school district - competitive, but not "pressure cooker" schools. I would like a typical suburban neighborhood and a walkable town with good shopping, good restaurants and down-to-earth neighbors. Commuting is not an issue for us. Any suggestions?
Yorktown Heights is a good area with good schools and neighbors. The Commerce St/Hanover St area offers plenty of shopping with sidewalks for walking.
If you like walkable areas, you may want to also consider:
- Mt.Kisco (part of the Bedford schools)
- Pleasantville (mid-Westchester and with their own schools)
- Katonah (Katonah-Lewisboro schools)
All have well-regarded schools and Metro-North RR stations in the heart of the walking areas.
I'd add the Sunset and Harmon areas of Croton village to the list. With Yorktown Heights, it sounds like you'd be interested in the areas directly around the commerical center (which tend to be more "typical suburban" than other parts of town).

I vote for Yorktown Heights - moved here 6 yrs ago and couldn't be happier, and I was looking for the same things as you are. That said, we also found Thornwood/Hawthorne, West Harrison,& Eastchester to be good as well - but we love the lifestyle we have here for the money, and we are very happy with our kids' school.
Croton. It's next to Yorktown. Even though commuting is not an issue, it's always good to have a metro north station in town so you can take trips into the city.
