Some larger companies in the city have on-site emergency care centers (Time Inc did not too long ago), but most will have a daycare reimbursement plan by which they pay for a portion of the costs and enable you to put the money aside pre-tax. These programs can usually be used at any licensed and certified center, and there are a number of such centers in midtown Manhattan.

seems counter intuitive that you would be looking for that benefit in this economy. Is the job market getting better?

I'm sure that the larger companies would have them, but from my experience in LA at least, unless you are a top executive, your child will be in school before your name comes up on the waiting list.

large banks / FI in the city have back-up daycare center in or nearby their building. rare to have full time daycare in the building. People send their kids in in the morning and pick up at afterwork. Why do you need the center to be in the building? In terms of economy, my kid's daycare lost so many kids for the summer and several classes are not even close to full. No more waiting list. But it is a pricey one.
