I'm impressed with the Avalon apartment complex in Elmsford and am having to leave NYC after 35 years. Can anyone tell me a bit about the town? I have a partner and two pets and we both need to commute to the city. The apartment itself looks great and we don't mind if the place is quiet, so long as it has some character and something to eat after 8pm. Ha!

Elmsford does not have a metro north station. How do you plan to commute?

My impression is that Elmsford is more industrial than residential with not much "character". Hartsdale is much more charming, has a nice village center and train station with short commute.

Elmsford is indeed pretty industrial. It has some limited residential parts, which are typically mostly poor. So there is not much to be said about positive character around the Elmsford neighborhood, you're not going to spend evenings strolling into a quaint town.
That said, you're a short drive from many vibrant areas. So if you don't mind getting in your car and driving 5-10 minutes, if Elmsford is just the apartment for living, then you're fine.

Hi - I'm a long-time Elmsford resident..and wanted to tell you that Elmsford is a great place in Westchester. Yes, there are restaurants that are open after 8:00 pm......Pete's Saloon, on Route 119, is open late, and you can get even a late-night menu until 11:00 pm Often there is terrific entertainment on weekends....Alaroma, on Route 119 (which is main drag in Elmsford)...is a great Italian restaurant and nice atmosphere....Maxwell's Pub is a small local tavern with a pool table and nice-sized bar and has power ball - it is a wonderful place though also for very reasonable lunches and dinners; for instance, usually on Thursdays they have meat loaf dinner with veg and potatoes - huge dish and goes for something like $8.95; there are brothers (Maxwell) that own it and are very nice; Ichi Riki is also on main drag - very good if you like Asian food - has been there many years;
Carmine's Deli on Old Road, just off "119", across from Fire House, has wonderful Italian "wedges" and caters also; Spadaccia's is off "119", one block in from CVS -- go there and order breakast for take-out --- fastest grill in the East --- great bacon, egg and cheese sandwiches, self-serve coffee - lunches are wonderful too (huge pastrami, roast beef, etc. etc. sandwiches) as well as delicious lasagna - many specials each day. It's like being in NYC as far as "in and out" fast...
Right outside of Elmsford, 1 mile, is Demeter's Restaurant - sports restaurant - pizza, burgers, shrimp in the basket good - restaurant is "119" toward Tarrytown - turn right on Benedict Avenue and first left ---residential section so you might think you are on wrong street....
Go toward White Plains on "119" and about 1 1/2 miles, you'll see LaManda's Italian Restaurant; park in front, on side or in back --- this restaurant has been there since 1940's -great Italian - linguini with clam sauce is good; broiled pork chops with vinegear peppers also great; the salad is very good too....the bar is "homey" --- nice people, friendly....;
I'm not sure where the apt complex is that you are thinking about moving to....but wanted to share some "food" ideas with you in the area of Elmsford....if you will be living right in the "village", you can walk to all the restaurants I mentioned right in Elmsford. Hope this helps.

It means the taxes are lower......
there are some very nice neighborhoods in Elmsford....
it is within a commuting distance to NYC; -- go Tarrytown Train Statiion and you can park at meters for a reasonable daily rate ---- you can "jump: on the Saw Mill River Parkway to go to city; Sprain Brook Parkway to "87"; or just go on "87" right in Elmsford....
by the way, where do you live?

Yes, it means the places that are even poorer are cities and not towns (i.e. Yonkers, Mt. Vernon, Peekskill).
While it is true that Elmsford is pretty "industrial", the Avalon complex is pretty far removed from that and quite luxurious in itself, and the area around rt. 119 is pretty nice and very "luxury/corporate" in look and feel. If you had kids there'd be an issue with schools but I had a friend who lived at Avalon as a single male and he did fine, he only moved out because his job situation changed and he couldn't afford it anymore.

People on this board always tend label Elmsford "poor" or a dump and that's simply not the case. It is a very small town. There's a industrial area not far from the center of the town, but its nothing to worry about. There are actually a few interesting shops on a few of those blocks (including a state of the art recording studio).
Around main street (rt 119) the streets run north and south, most of these streets are solidly middle class and even upper middle class. The area where the Avalon is located is a bit out in the cut (by some office parks), you'll definitely need a car but as mentioned your a short drive from both Tarrytown and White Plains. The Thruway is literally right there as well as the sprain so you can head into the city or across the bridge very easily. One thing to be aware of is that in the morning, you'll probably have to drive down taxter road to rt. 119 and the traffic (coming from the bridge) can be ridiculous.
I second May on the recommendation for Demeters Tavern, they make some really good albeit "expensive" nachos.
How are you commuting into the city? Metro North? or by car?

Elmsford is too crowded with traffic, including big trucks, along Rt. 9 and 119, if I could afford to live elsewhere in Westchester County, Elmsford would not be my choice just for that reason, there are so many other less congested, non-industrial areas of Westchester County, even parts of Yonkers are much better than that. Who would want to be around all that pollution all day?
