It is really unhelpful if the parent classifies the child has low or high functioning. Talk about the deficits and the parents can relate better. On one hand, the child may have behavioral issues, that need different kind of services, where the other child may have speech impairment and that would need other kind of services. Most probably, depending on the school, the above two kids may not be in the same class.
So if you can tell others about deficits, the parents of other kids can relate more and suggest if their child's class is for your child or not. From my research, I noticed the classes on certain schools tend to have same type of ASD kids (in other words, the kids tend ti have similar deficits.)
Just stay out of Yonkers and probably Larchmont/Mamaroneck, as they are rather huge districts and you have to be lucky if you get services that you really need.
The Pleasantville review shocked me. From my knowledge, it was one of the best SDs.
thanks for all your input. I wanted to note for those searching for a great place we moved to Rye where my son has recieved amazing support. He was given a full time onene aide with significant experience. His IEP from Boston only called for shared aide. He is fully integrated and doing exceptionally well. I was discouraged by a few from Rye, I think for the child with more needs this would not be the right place. For any child the classes are small, the teachers excellent and caring and I have been impressed.
Best of luck.
We've been in Blind Brook and generally it's been good. This year we have our son out of district in Eastchester in order to access work-study and some other programs that should help.
I live in Yonkers and they are the worst. My son who has speech delays and minor behaviour issues was given less services once he moved from pre-k to kindergarten. And his teacher was calling my wife within the first three hours on the first day of school saying he wasn't gonna work out in this setting. I'm moving as soon as the house sells. We want the best for my son. We just need something about an hour away from Manhattan so I could still commute into work. What districts should I be looking at?
