First time fireplace owner and need the fireplace cleaned in white plains. Looked online and found Mr chimney. Are they good? I've been warned about chimney sweeps trying to sell unneeded linings and stuff, so I want a reputable place or individual that won't try to sell me something I don't need.

Also, what stuff can't I burn in the fireplace? I have some wood laying around I may try to burn, such as old outdoor fencing, 2x4s, subflooring, old furniture. Don't really want to spend money buying wood from grocery store, when there's a bunch laying around. But of course I don't want to ruin my fireplace or stink up the home.

1. Congrats on having a fireplace. While it seems fun, romantic, and cozy; you need to read up on safety precautions and fire dangers.

2. Check with the BBB regarding chimney sweep companies. I had Chimney Corners come out and I had to file a complaint with BBB about them. Now I just have a wood stove and clean the flue myself.

3. No, No & No. In a wood stove you could burn that stuff... Furniture will have coatings of stains, varnish, paints, chemicals, NOT GOOD TO BURN! You risk Carbon Monoxide in your home! Fence might have been pressure treated, NOT GOO TO BURN! No Pine! Nothing that spits otherwise your hardwood floors will have hot ambers landing on them.

Oaks, Maples, Cherry, Tulip, Birch, Beech, all great "clean" wood to burn.

Check craiglist for guys selling firewood. Dont buy those bundles. They are a rip off. For $100 you can get 150 pieces!
