I have 3 young children and will be moving to Scarsdale this summer. We are thinking of hiring a nanny who lives in the Bronx but who is not comfortable driving our kids around. How much of a problem will this be in terms of getting to playdates, playgrounds, activities, etc. Are there particular areas in Scarsdale we should look at or avoid? Are buses a viable alternative? I am home two days a week and can drive everyone around then.
My older son will be 3 and in preschool and extended care so I can manage him. The non-driving really impacts my twins, who will be one this summer.
I don't think the 1 year old twins will be having a lot of playdates. I suggest you move
somewhere within walking distance to a park. Westchester County buses don't seem to
be a viable option.

Scarsdale life entails being driven around. The older the kids, the more. It would be one thing if you already had a nanny that was wonderful. But if you're just hiring somebody I'd hire a driving nanny. It may not be an issue immediately but eventually it will be, there's just no avoiding it. Otherwise you'll be 100% at the mercy of your schedule.
I think it would be possible to work it out, particularly if you lived in an area like Arthur Manor in Edgewood, which has Davis Park in the middle of it and which has a nice playground for small children. Or you could look in one of the neighborhoods that is closer to the Village or the library (Greenacres or Fox Meadow) so the nanny could walk them to story time or to the Village for an outing.
But I would worry a bit that if, say, one of the children were ill, there would be no way for the nanny to get them to the doctor's.
never heard of someone picking a house based on the nanny's inability to drive. There are so many other aspects of buying a home, that I doubt this will be one of your considerations. Therefore, look for another solution to your nanny problem. Maybe, call a taxi for the playdates? Although, I am not sure how the car seats issue would be handled.
Honestly, I can't imagine this working. The trouble is that most streets do NOT have sidewalks, and I can't imagine lugging 3 kids around on snow-covered streets in the winter...
Many nannies in Scarsdale do not drive at all and take the bus. However, these nannies usually service stay at home mom house holds. The buses just do not run at very early times and do not run often.
Where are one year old twins going to have to go in a car anyway? I could see a problem if the kids were older...but at that age, it should not be much of an issue.
