My Cousin Raybourn is moving to South Yonkers, He said he found a decent apparment(not projects), But he's worried about the area. He's from Albany. I've worned him and told him South Yonkers is pretty grimy, but i'm not sure of the certin areas since i've only drivin thru Yonkers never really visted or stayed there. So i'm going to need some help. If you know the area of South Yonkers very well please give me some info. Names of bad streets, bad areas, areas to shop etc. He keeps sayin "cuz, i'm from Arbor Hill! south YO can't be that bad. I'm sure hes in for a rude awakening. Much love for the help i hope many of you show.

Southeast Yonkers, while a bit gritty, is pretty decent especially along Bronx River Road. The closer to the Hudson you get the worse it gets. The area around Getty Square (Ghetto Square) is supposedly improving but I wouldn't want to live there.

If he's thinking of moving to S. Yonkers, why doesn't he go a bit further and move into Riverdale/Kingsbridge?

SE Yonkers is mostly working families. I find it to be simple and beautiful. Certainly not snooty, but very safe and friendly. Great for kids. Lots of great food options, most deliver. Very walkable, amazing public school (if you can get in). Very close to the train. West is not so nice with some crime. I can't imagine the apartments in the SE are much pricier. And there are many multi-family options available.

Having lived for about 5 years in the Albany area (albeit a little over 20 years ago) I would say Arbor Hill is probably grittier than southEAST Yonkers. It's southWEST Yonkers that's the real problem.

I'm familiar with Arbor Hill, and it's a bit tame (by my standards that is..) and its quite small, I can tell things go down there but if your the type to mind your own business then you'll be ok. SE around bronx river rd will be a walk in the park for your cousin, he'll need a car though. Southwest, towards and around the square is a different story, but i'm sure he'd be fine there as well.
