I work in White Plains on Mamaroneck Ave (not close to the Metro North Train). My boyfriend works in Manhattan (midtown). We are in our mid 20's, no kids, and are interested in an area that offers nightlife in a close proximity to where we live. We want a 1 bedroom and our price max is $1400/month.

We know nothing about New York City (except for Times Square). We looked at Pelham Bay and found it to lack a night life. We know we can not afford to live in midtown (and probably close proximity to it).

Currently, I drive to work (1 - 1.5 hours commute) and he takes the metro north train (1.5 - 2 hours commute). We live in a small town with nothing to do after work (and we hate it!). I am willing to take public transportation if having a car will be impossible and/or if the cost of driving commute is more expensive than public transportation. He cannot take a car to work (no parking). We keep hearing both negative and positive things to living in White Plains vs. NYC (burroughs included).

So what would be the most convenient place to live that fits our needs?
Needs:
1+ bedroom
Nightlife
Access to public transportation for him
Rent no more than $1,400/month
Safe area

If anyone one could point us in the right direction, that would be great! Thanks!

Default no brainer--check out White Plains

There are certainly rental options for a 1 bedroom around $1400 in White Plains. You have a wonderful nightlife in White Plaions, that location would eliminate most of your commute, and the commute to midtown is 35 minutes or so on the express metro north.

Try looking into New Rochelle - night light, shopping, Metro North train to NYC.

If she's looking into New Rochelle, she might as well stay in White Plains. Nicer, safer city, more dining and nightlife options, and a faster train ride into NYC. No brainer.
