Can someone tell me which neighborhoods in Scarsdale are walking distance to the train station/village? Our housing budget is about 1 million which I realize is not much for Scarsdale standards but we would be content with a starter house that needs a little work. Also, we are a biracial Asian/black family with three young kids--do you think our children would fit in socially?
Why would you want to be house poor just for the sake of living in Scarsdale? Is it for the schools? There are many other neighborhoods in Westchester and the NYC metro area where your children can get the same or better education for much less cost.

The village is in Fox Meadow, the southern part. The norther part of Fox Meadow is NOT walking distance to the Scarsdale village, but IS walking distance to Hartsdale village and train station. The Greenacres neighborhood (south and west part) is also close to Hartsdale.
It can be advantageous to get on the train in Hartsdale in the morning because many of the rush hour trains originate there.

Yes, the excellent schools are a big factor, along with quick commute to Grand Central, and a walkable village area. There are actually not that many towns in Southern Westchester that meet all three criteria and the towns that do are all just as expensive as Scarsdale.
Why not Tuckahoe? For less than a million, you can get a large spanking new condominium in Rivervue near the Metro North stop. The schools are great in terms of classroom instruction. Seems to be a better alternative than buying a rundown home in Scarsdale.
And if you're willing to live in Long Island, Garden City's schools are just as comparable as Scarsdale with good condition homes selling for less than $1M. Garden City is also a walking town with an LIRR stop.

edgewood is just over 1 mile from the train station, so you could walk it. or you could the #63 bus which takes you to the station and synchronizes with the trains.
you will find $1mm is ample for a 3-4 bedroom house in edgewood. there are plenty of international families in the neighborhood too.
The problem with that mile walk is that it is up a really STEEP and windy hill. I'd consider myself pretty athletic and that hill would even get to me on snowy or really hot days.
However, I have to ask why people in Edgemont don't favor the Hartsdale station? You can get a permit there pretty easily, I've been told. We've considered homes there, but to be honest really would prefer not to have to use all of Greenburgh's amenities if we are spending as much for a house there as in Scarsdale.
We are a mixed asian family looking for a house in the Scarsdale area too (less than $1Mill was ideal). In terms of neighborhood diversity & housing prices, we have been favoring the Edgewood Elem School area, the Edgemont area, & Fox Meadow areas but have limited our search to a 25 min walk to the train from Edgewood & Edgemont. You really need to go in person to visit Edgewood & Edgemont to really know the hilly areas. If you stick to the beginning of Edgewood, as close to the elem school as possible than you can have a nice 20 min walk without too much hills. Edgemont is much hillier and we wouldn't consider a house too far up Ardsley Rd and even by the Hartsdale train station side gets very steep very fast. Any house close to the Seely Pl Elem School is too steep of a daily walk to do to the train station in our opinion. So you have to know the streets and know where you wouldn't want to live. I personally like the Hartsdale train village much better than the Scarsdale village since it has more (& very good) restaurants. Yum!
I have to ask, though...why would people in Edgemont do a 20 minute each way walk through heat, rain and snow before parking and using the Hartsdale station? Maybe everyone out here doesn't have 2 cars, or maybe parking is difficult. Anyone know?
There is parking available at the Hartsdale station.... also if you live in Quaker Ridge it is just as quick to the Mamaroneck Train Station or the Crestwood Train Station...but you would have to drive....
