You can view a report for the school district you are interested in, and it will give you all sorts of information on demographics, teacher's education levels, number of kids per classroom, Regent's scores, graduation rate, etc.
I was very surprised to see that a school district that has a "it's good, not awesome" reputation is almost equal (on these pages, though I know it is not the full picture) to some very good school districts in the county in terms of scores, graduation rates, etc.
