I think I know the answer to this, but I want to ask -
Are sellers in NY state required to remove asbestos in a house in order to get a certificate of occupancy? I am specifically asking about asbestos wrapped pipes - maybe about 30 feet worth?

Anyone know how much it would cost to remove?

Thank you!

When my wife and I were shopping for a house, more than a year ago, we found a couple that did have asbestos. You can still live in a house with it, it just cannot be disturbed. If you're renovating and the renovations come near/contact with the insulation, yes, you have to remove it. I would want to remove it, period, but that's just me.

Just out of curiosity, why would you need to obtain a CO on a pre-existing structure? A CO granted in the 50's is still valid today, for example, unless modifications have been made since then...

The CO comment was something my friend mentioned to me. She just bought a house in NJ and mentioned something abt the sellers having to get a CO.

Yes, we were looking at a house with asbestos, and was hoping that the sellers would remove it. We found out that the house has many more issues than just asbestos, so it is no longer an issue.
