Can anyone share their thoughts about how the Murray Avenue elementary school in Larchmont compares to the Chatsworth school? The houses in the Murray Ave district are about 10% cheaper and I'm wondering if that has to do with the quality of the school. Thanks.

Nope, it has absolutely nothing to do with the schools. They are both the most highly coveted in the district. It's purely a function of geography. Chatsworth pulls in the most expensive part of the town - Larchmont Manor, as well as a good part of the walkable village (which always fetches a premium). Murray does, too, but also many homes a bit further from the station and less walkable.

Central is nicely referred to as 'diverse' meaning some village homes go there, but a good portion of the co-op/apartment kids go there too, so it's not uniformly wealthy. Mamaroneck Avenue is majority-minority, and although it is considered good by many, I also know that many parents did not consider it for their kids because they feared that the large number of ESL kids would too negatively affect their child's ability to flourish (true or not, I cannot tell you. The teachers and staff seemed fine to me when I toured).

Agree it is more of a function of the location than the schools. Also the houses zoned for Chatsworth School are actually in the village of Larchmont, while the ones zoned for Murray Avenue are in the Town of Mamaroneck Larchmont post office address (if that matters to you). Murray actually rates higher than Chatsworth sometimes but the difference is negligible.

Default Hommocks/MHS?

Hi there - is there any truth to what I've heard about a lot of kids leaving the Mamaroneck public system after elementary school and heading to private and/or Catholic schools? If so, how does this impact the Hommocks/MHS experience?

I have never heard this. Majority of the people that live in Mamaroneck and Larchmont send their kids to Mamaroneck schools including high school and a small number of them (usally the french expats) to the French American School.

I believe most of the kids at the Catholic school in Larchmont similar to the one in Scarsdale are actually from outside Larchmont/Mamaroneck i.e from places like New Rochelle. Most people that send their kids to the Catholic School usually start at the Kindergarten level to ensure that the kids get a solid Catholic education not high school.

I have family in Larchmont and she uses Chatsworth and than switches to private. She said many people go to private ms rather than Hommocks but she also said many stay in public.

Mamaroneck high school is a decent, solid school, but its not fabulous. When you're buying for schools you certainly have to look beyond elementary school level, it soon gets to the next stage..
